What is a Filigree Swivel Knife Blade

Recommended Posts

What is a Filigree Swivel Knife blade?

How is it used?

What is the differance of the filigree and the normal swivel knife blade?

Thanks,

Paul

A filigree blade is like an angle blade, but the angle is steeper. It was designed to filigree, which is cutting out the background areas of a floral carving instead of using a background tool. You would then put a different color of leather behind it to give a contrast. The colored leather would show through where the back ground areas were cut out. There used to be a lot of belts made that way. I think the filigree blade is probably also used for fine detail work on some carvings.

I second that motion from Clay.

Most people nowadays use it for fine detail carving (tight curves, small spaces, etc...). They will use an xacto knife or the like to complete filigrees.

I find myself using the filigree blade more than the straight blade because I find it easier to see what I'm doing. Whereas the straight blade is so wide it covers my view of the leather somewhat. I think the straight blade cuts a wider path.
