Somawas' introduction

Recommended Posts

I am a total newbie at leatherworking. Got into the hobby through a strange route. I've sailed sailboats for thirty years, plue. A while back, I started stitching some ship's canvas pieces. And based on my experience so far, I'd have to say that canvas can sometimes be tougher than leather. From there I got into some braiding and knotwork. The I began to collect rigging kinives. Knives need sheaths, which sent me to Tandy. The store owner talked me into taking his basic tooling class. So here I am. Sixty years old and still taking up new hobbies. Maybe some day I'll grow up.

Welcome, Somawas.

Leather has a long history with the nautical. They go well together.

If you are in that kind of place you may be able to look up some sailmakers shops, and get some sewing machines and tools at a fair price. Don't forget oar wraps as a simple project too.

Welcome! It sounds like we had similar paths to here. My other interest led to a Tandy store and before I knew it I was hooked and amassing a whole 'nother collection of foofaraw of gadgets for yet another hobby.

Somawas:

at 65), I still don't know what I'll be when I grow up... :dunno:

...but I'm gonna have a lot of fun deciding. After all, life is too short to get too serious about it.
