Knife Sheath Pattern Needed

Does anyone have or know where I might be able to get a hold of a knife sheath pattern that holds the knife in a horizontal position on a belt instead of the standard vertical position? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Butch, I don't have any specific patterns as I custom make each one to the knife. Having said that I have a few styles that I usually just modify to fit the need. Dave

This version is for a Strider Knife.Simple pouch, slightly canted. The belt loop is glued on the back then opened and sewn high up on the pouch then closed and sewn along with the main stitch line. If you not tooling the front or doing an inlay you can wrap the belt loop over the top and sew both ends along the main stitch line, just another way.

If you want a more secure way than the standard pouch you can try this type of retention. This style works best with knives with a small single guard or knives with a big finger cutout.

This one I put the belt loop on the bottom so it could rest better in the small of the back( the customer wanted it for concealment) and show less under a shirt.

Yep - your gonna have to buy the fancy construciton paper and stapler toolkit to design your own sheath -

i think between staples and the supermarket youll have all the tools youll need, maybe some scissors too

maybe buy a book of sheath construction techniques, or dig around online

or you can use paper and figure it out in an hour... and have your own design

but i'd dig into the idea of welts and welt/locks before i started making freeform sheaths

I have a box full of sheath patterns but find it is usually quicker for me to start from scratch. This is because I am working on custom stuff and not producing the same sheath for the same knife over and over. There are numerous articles, books and DVD's on sheath making basics. There has been numerous articles in The Leather Crafters and Saddlers Journal over the years and I think there was one or two on horizontal designs. Check their website for back issues on sheaths. They have a special catagory for them so it's easy to find. Here is a horizontal sheath I recently made. As you can see from this and the others posted, everyone has their own idea. I don't like keeper straps that blades can cut so I used a pin lock system on this one. The knife is similar to the first one Dave shows. The pin goes in right behind the blade and the snap keeps it in place. Let me know if I can be of any help with working out your pattern.

Thanks for all of the input guys. It just makes sense to me to have a sheath that you can pull the knife out naturally. I'll take a better look at all your sheaths and maybe I can come up with something that will work. I promise I won't copy yours though. I just needed a little bit of a jump start. Thanks again.

Here's something I tried for my own knife. Granted, it took a little planning and work, but it gave me the clean look I wanted and

holds the knife horizontally.

You could also get a good result by using a narrower strip of leather at a slight angle.
