The head knives are high end and cut through veg tan no problem. Maybe the bison flesh was too fibrous. On a section that had little to no fibers the knives did work, as they did on veg tan leather.

The results of testing several hand skiving methods on 3/4 oz Bison bag leather tanned for upholstery was not what I expected. The traditional round knives and head knives were ineffective in cutting the the fibrous flesh of the hide. And they were very sharp. The single razor blade skivers just bogged down also. Remarkably a hair trimming electric cutter trimmed the ‘fuzzy’ flesh to a manageable size, but would not skive. The solution was to breakout the double edge razors and try them. Not only did they remove the fuzz from the flesh side, once that was done it skived the Bison to a very thin piece of 1/2 inch wide tapered useable leather. Drawback was cleaning the blade after a bit and of course not everyone has double edge razors or blade’s available. Going to try the motorized skivers at the Prescott trade show and see what the results are. Stephen

I have a question related to these kind of skivers. Will this kind of skiver, even the mechanical ones, do a good job of skiving on 4-5 oz bag leather such as bison, and other very flexible leather?

I was just looking for a skiver like this for wallets and bags also. Please post your experience with it. As it was also posted, the resort is to purchase a quality skiving knife and practice, practice, practice.

Just bought some beaver tail to make either knife sheaths or holster for compact gun. now the question is how do you put a finish on them and do they sew up well. seems like they will be the right thing for traditional looking knifes. does anyone know how they holdup for a holster inlay? Thanks

Looking for input on the FERDCO 440. Is it a good starter machine. its limits, drawbacks, good points. Will be used for tack and chaps. thread sizes 99,138,207,277,346,415 needle sizes from #160 to #250. machine is 4 yeqrs old.

Thanks to both of you for the fast response. something new learned. since I have seen rawhide on only a few horns it looked durable. but roping 3 times a week I still would like to keep my fingers. I do wrap with rubber but if it slips i will not use rawhide. somethings are better for show than to use.

made my first saddle and wanted to do a rawhide horn wrap. got an 1 1/2 inch by 40 inch rawhide piece, wet it, then skiieved it to a manageabvle thickness. but it on and tightened. when it dried i was not a happy person. there were some wraps with gaps and the wrap had a loose fit. followed the same instructions as for a 'mulehide' wrap except did not have a 'chinaman'. i have one to use now. should I have used rawhide or latigo for this. would the use of a "chinaman" helped this be a better wrap? any suggestions or alternatives is appreciated.

Did my first rawhide hornwrap instead of using 'mulehide', thought that everything looked good until I checked it out the next day. the rawhide dried with several loops not as tight and actually loose. Soaked and skived the rawhide to a manageable thickness. used a homemade 'chinaman' to tighten. am i missing a step or should I not have used the rawhide. Now its a pain to re-wet and start over since it is now on the horn. Any suggestions are welcomed.
