Hey Guys! A gentleman brought in an inskirt rigged saddle today for rigging repair, new wool, and general restoration. He had told Carlos over the phone that it was a "Hamley" saddle, so we were both really looking forward to seeing it. When it arrived, it had this maker's mark on the latigo carrier. Is anyone familliar with this maker? If so, could you share some information about this company we could tell the owner about? Thanks! Mike P.S. This photo looked a hell of a lot better in the viewfinder of my camera in a dimly lit shop than it does on my (and probably your) computer!! Sorry...

A customer has an English saddle (type unknown) on which one of the seams where the seat joins the side has started to widen (stretch apart). Is a patch possible on this area? If so, how would the patch be attached? Thanks. Kathy

I got in a saddle for repair with a hole in the middle of the fender. It's dry and dirty and needs a reline, but it appears as though something corrosive dripped onto this spot. It looks oily but burnt and the leather just falls out in chips. If all the damaged leather were to chip out it doesn't look like it would continue past the area of quarter size. It has full stirrup leathers so I'm almost inclined to just clean and condition well and leave it at that. Although I get the impression the customer would like me to DO something. I could envision cutting a circle of leather out around the spot putting in a plug, redo the carving on the plug, and then lining from…

First of all, Hi to everyone. I just found this place and and all the happier for it. Here's the run down. I found and fell in love with a saddle at a local sale. Being a horseman and an amatuer leather crafter, I could not help but become enamoured with the tooling and quality of this saddle. I have rode it once and both the horse and I appreciated the construction of the saddle. I will post pics tonight if my camera will cooperate. I have talked to the guys at the M.L. Leddy's in Fort Worth and they stated it wasn't their doing and that I should talk to James' widow up in Abilene. I did and I have to tell you she is one of the kindest ladies you'll ever meet. Gave…

I can't remember where I got this picture. Does anyone know anything about this pack saddle? Or have you made anything similar. If so how did you like it? I'm trying to figure out the rigging on it, how the 3 ring piece is connected. Regards Buff

My father has an old australian saddle which he got for free several years ago. He was told by someone who was supposed to have knowledge of saddles that this saddle wasn't straight so he shouldn't use it. I have no knowledge of saddles (or horses), but I get depressed to see it lying in his basement not being used. It is pretty worn so I thought I maybe should replace the worn leather on it, but then I had to be sure it was useable. How can I measure if it is straight and What can I do to fix it if it's not? Should I just throw it in the garbage and get it out of sight?

I bought this saddle a while back in an antique store. It had a pretty good old example of a fishcord cinch on it. The stirrups were brassbounds, with an iron strapping over that. Had about half the leather left. The metal horn is a repair horn, the broken stump is evident. No identifiable maker's mark on the leather. The guy wouldn't sell me the stirrups or cinch separately. In the past I have cut the forks off some old junkers and screwed them down to a board with the horn facing up to make hat or coat hooks. That was plan "B" for this one. Yesterday I got around to scrapping this one. A few items of interest as I took it apart. First off the swells are pretty n…

Hi....I'm not a leather worker, but I sometimes lurk here for tidbits of info. You guys are all so knowledgable, that I thought I would see what you have to say about this saddle i have. It's off eBay, so I have no history on it. And there are a few things I haven't seen before (keeping in mind I am most familiar with older mid range production saddles). Here are a whole bunch of pictures, so they can do the talking http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b388/pal...addle/?start=20 It has no makers marks or numbers at all (even with in tact latigo keeper) It's deeply tooled, I am assuming by hand? The buckstitching appears to be plastic, and the rigging dees aluminum (?…

What would you charge to replace the seat leather (hard seat), cantle back and binding? I was thinking $400-500, I ask another guy, and he said I was to low. I would appreciate some others opinions, I do very little repair work and really don’t know what a fair price would be. Thanks Steve
