Hi everybody, Goldpony's post got me thinking about how long/short a cinch should be. I've heard people say that the cinch should be short and the off-billet/latigo long, but goldpony's thread had me thinking that it might be the other way 'round. So how long do you folks think the cinch should be? And if you could post photos of what you believe to be the ideal balance of cinch length to latigo length (assuming the latigo and off-billet are equally balanced), that'd be just great. Thanks! Joanne

My daughter has a used youth roping saddle. The problem is that the horn is not very thick in diameter and the cap is not very large. I was wondering if it would be possible to unwrap the horn and stiches and to enlarge the diameter and horn cap. The tree is fiberglass covered. The goal is perhaps a 3" cap and a horn large enough and shapped so that her dallies go to the bottom of the horn and the rope has more surface area touching the horn with each wrap. Your thoughts? A client and friend of mine bought a high end show saddle and paid not one but two pretty pennies for it two years ago. The saddle was used very very lightly at probably 10 shows. He called me to let me know that the silver turned black, and it won't polish, its almost like the plating came off the saddle. I work pretty much in strap goods and harnesses and have no idea about silver. Is this normal? is this something that happens? are there differnt levels of plating? In your eyes should the maker stand behind this? The maker also made the silver Thanks again guys! -Andrew

I just wanted to take a moment and thank everyone who posted and helped on this project. He came and picked it up today, and I don't think many kids in a candy store were a lot happier than he was. I replaced the little "D" ring up by the horn, . . . both of the "D" rings for attaching the breast strap, . . . re-stitched the whole top of the saddle horn (after I took out the nylon monofilament fishing line someone previously used), . . . I re-sewed the outside edge just about all the way around it (all hand sewing, . . . ughhhh), . . . gave it a real good bath, . . . and oiled it lightly. The silver conchos were a pain to polish, got them done, . . . replaced the roset…

Hi all! This saddle (and tree) was custom made for my horse. I am concerned about the cinch placement pinching/digging in to his shoulder muscle. Any suggestions? Thank you very much!

A friend of mine, one with limited financial resources, brought me a saddle and asked me if I could "repair" it for him. He showed me a couple of places where the thread had broken on the sewing, and the saddle was coming apart (see blue arrows). It is on the edges of the skirts, front and rearl I've never taken a saddle apart, . . . but I'm wondering if the screw at the end of the red arrow is the key to getting the seat off and the skirts also off so I can sew them back together on my stitcher. The conchos were on a screw like post, . . . went into the tree, and came out fairly easily. There are also nails in the "accessory" carriers in the front of the saddle. Th…

Rod and I have been tossing around the idea of putting together a short seminar on trees from a tree maker's perspective. Things we would talk about would include: 1.) Measuring a tree: what different measurements used, what they tell you and what they don't, what you can measure on a finished tree and what you can't, etc. 2.) Getting the looks you want in the different components of a tree: a.) Fork – what factors affect the shape and how. b.) Horn – wood versus metal, factors that affect the look and why. c.) Cantle – the three slopes in every cantle and how they relate, factors that affect the shape and how they interact with dish, a bit about angles. 3.) …

Does anyone know where I could get a set of old West saddle patterns for a drover saddle? I really like the style and rigging and would like to build one, but have no idea where to get patterns. Any help would be fantastic. Hans
