So I've had this Al Stohlman maul for years and I like it for tooling, but the head has started spinning around and that pretty much makes it unusable. The thing wasn't cheap and I do like it so I decided to fix it. When I took it apart I saw that the head is held only by a friction fit with the nut at the bottom of the handle putting pressure on the top medallion and the metal piece under the head. I came up with an idea for pinning the shaft of the tool with a 5/32" tension pin. I did this near the top medallion, just under it. I then used the 5/32 drill to make several holes in the head to make a mortise for the pin to fit down into, locking the shaft to one position within the head. Making the mortise was kind of a pain and I had to finish it with a 1/4" wood chisel. I replaced the big nut at the bottom with a different kind and got rid of the annoying lock washer. It's all together now and that head will never spin again. It has a couple places where you can see the ends of the mortise that I cut on either side of the top medallion but I don't care about that.
