Often times I will add only a strip of leather for a welt...only the high paying customers get the rolled welt!
-
I'm guessing you have most of them, like an overstitch wheel and a groover. I use a diamond awl and two needles in addition to those.
-
One thing that I also do is, when I am about to punch my holes, I will punch holes in the corners or along long lines, after I make sure that the edges are lined up good, and put a needle or pin or something in those holes to hold the entire project still and lined up...it helps me.

very nice looking stuff you make there sir!

I draw my patterns out on Powerpoint and when I think I have it right, print it out and cut it out...If I can make a bag pattern work with paper, I will transfer that to some old thick file folders that I found and use that for the pattern forever. My wife actually had some old sewing patterns of bags and cases that transfered pretty well to leather.

If you have access to the Buckskinner books, I believe that the third volume has a pattern for one. I wouold use around 8 oz to make it as well. I have one that was made from 4-5 oz and its a little flimsy.

One thing that I have done when hand sewing a rolled edge is to wet that edge and hold it down till it dries with document clasps or the like (I use veg tan) and then punch and sew it like normal.

I know this is an old post but do you still have this item for sale?
-
Just a thought on my part, but if you are very careful to keep the stitches on the bottom piece of leather very straight and accurate, why couldn't you go back after the holes are punched and put the groove in along the line of stitches?

All my work is hand stitched as well...the reenacting folks that I sell most of my stuff to really appreciate the fact that is it sewn in this way.

Howdy all! Been kinda lurking and posting a little here and there. I make possibles bags and shooting bags and knife sheaths and archery items and the like...mostly stuff for late 18th century to early 19th century reenacting! I also have a small website at

Here is one that I made not too long ago...

The body of the bag is sewn together at 11 stitches per inch as well as the two pockets on the front. The bag has hand cut fringe and features a nice gusset in the bottom that narrows down at the corners. He needed two pockets on the front to hold stuff, so he got that, as well as a strip sewn across the back inside to hold his short starter and powder measure and pan charger when they are not being used. Further, he wanted his totem on the front with a red wool backer. Its the first time I have done one with a cloth backing and I think it turned out pretty good. The strap is adjustable as well as the straps that will hold his powder horn, which he wanted to be removable as well. So here it is!

Well I am kinda new to this site but have been stitching by hand a while...and I never burn or tie the ends of my thread. I use only waxed linen and back stitch three holes for one thread and four for the other so that they end up on the same side and then snip them off very close to the leather. I have never had a piece come apart... so far.
