  1. This was a new learning experience for me...the tank was longer than any I've worked with so far and the client wanted full length versus the normal ones I make that come up about 1/2 way under the dash. The effect was great and allowed me to run the studs all the way over the tank creating a nice horizon effect. After the wet-forming, the bib dimensions are: 27" long, 12" wide and 6" deep (there is another 1-3" of leather wrapped under the tank). Studs are rivet-on 12mm chrome domed spots set 1 1/4" apart on center to match the aftermarket seat the client has. W&C 6oz. with 1/8" kangaroo lace - triple loop lacing with extended tooth for the herringbone effect.

I want to make one like this for my X. I need details Spinner. red_bandana.gif

My email is woodspinner at sbcglobal dot net

  2. how can I do better than that?

adhere well to skin on a saddle, I have very wet skin, and shaped by hand and withthe help of a rubber hammer. But where does the saddle curve remain puckers theskin and glued to the foam to make it adhere well, whenever I have this problem.

how can I do to improve?? Thanks to all

    billio8,

You're going to need someone more experienced that me. I'm too new at this to even try and give you an answer. Maybe someone will jump in here and give you an answer.

  3. I love it.!!! You_Rock_Emoticon.gif

I would love to make one like that for my VTX.!!!!

My only change would be to take the leather all the way to the front of the speedo housing. On most VTX'x, the speedo housing vibrates from the engine vibs causing the housing to 'rattle". My idea is to bring the bib all the way to the front and make it slightly thicker at the front to provide a "pad" for the housing so to help cut down or out the rattle noise.

Hey Chris.....how'd you make the pattern for this tank bib? I need to make one for my bike and I'm so new at all this that I'll have to make a pattern to go by first. blush.gif

  4. No problem Thumper! What kind of bike are we talking about here?

If I can help with anything, drop me a line.

I'm wanting to make a nice tank bib for my VTX1300C as well as a windshield bag for it.

I appreciate the offer of assistance Spinner. I am hoping to do some stuff over the winter (even though I continue to ride in the winter months as long as the roads are good) and have it all ready to look really good or at least better come spring ride time.

BTW, do you know where I can get some of those metal parts for a windshield bag? I have a ws bag on my 750 Shadow and it has a metal square with a hole in it and two "shoulders" on it that fit over the metal strip across the inside of the ws....and I'd like to find some of those for making my own ws bag.

  5. Hey Thumper,

I'm not an expert, but for the bibs and bags I have done this is what I use:

Bib: 5/6 oz. with felt backing sewn in.

Saddlebags: 9/10 oz. or 9/10 oz. front/back with 5/6 oz. sides

Windshield Bag and other small bags: 9/10 oz can be used (to keep costs down by using the same side the saddlebags were made from) but usually I use 5/6 oz for these.

lever covers: 3/4 oz. or 5/6 oz.

    Chris

Thanks Chris.!! Much appreciated. I like your work and it all looks good. I just hope I can do that well for my own bike needs/wants soon.

  6. I use my Tormek to put an edge on my tools through about 1,000 grit. Used it on my swivel knife for the initial edge and took about 20 seconds to get it nice and sharp. Rouge and some cardboard got it really nice and sharp in about a minute.

Take your time when learning to sharpen. It's not a race your are looking to win....it's an edge that cuts cleanly and smoothly and I haven't seen an edge yet that is in a hurry. rolleyes.gif

  7. while some others have replied....I'm so new that I squeak. rolleyes2.gif

At least you have tools and leather to work with. My daughter has already tooled up all the leather projects we bought and now I'm out of money and leather. The price we pay to be a dad. rolleyes.gif

I think you stuff looks good, but just that your stamping needs to be a bit deeper to make that images more clear....I guess that's what I'm saying. dunno.gif

  8. Kevin,

I am a biker and I am a Patriot Guard Rider.

Please allow me to sit here and type: I have a good friend that was diagnosed with ALS just 2 years ago. All I can say is that my heart goes out to you on the loss of your dad. I pray that through my thoughts and prayers that I can bring both honor and respect to you, your dad, and your family.

Beautiful work for a most awesome dad.

I'm loosing my dad to a very rare cancer that they can't cure.

  9. Beautiful work Spinner..!!!!!

Would you be so kind to share the weight of leather used and any dimensions? I'm new to leather stuff and spend most of my time reading and researching. I have a 1300 that I would love to make a tank bib for.

Those side bags are totally AWESOME.! I can't wait to see the details on those so I can make me some. red_bandana.gifred_bandana.gifred_bandana.gif
