Which Way Is With Grain When Cutting...
jc3persons replied to jc3persons's topic in All About Leather
yeah buddy,,,like the idea of 2 pieces for holster,,the one i made lined with pig skin, probably not the best choice...Using 4-5 oz doubled simplifiy choosing leather,,was considering 6-7 with a 2-3 liner, thus 2 hides with your way will be easier on the budget ....Now got to figure out where to buy the next double shoulder,,got the first one from Tandys on sale8-9 oz and being new to buying leather it seem ok but a lot of wrinkles,,in the belt especially...I am sure my 2nd attempt will be better with the info gained from this site.. i made so many mistakes ain't funny,,when get a camera and figure out how to post,,will put some laughs to view,,anyways learning and fun..thanks again -
Hi,,I piddled with tooling and assembly of some leather kits 40 years ago,but went by the wayside with making a living and all connected....Yard girl and self are retired in Rockport Texas and at 65 i have a different amount of time and schedule so i found my 40 yr old tools to try some holsters and such,,much more free time than money LOL for sure....Certainly hope my skils grow as i age,,craftsman ship is alive and well on this site,,I am in awe of the work i am seeing and thanks again for the help!! With my budget this is probably probably crazy question....I use what i have on supply the best way to make the project which so far is 1 holster, 1 dress gun belt, and 1 magazine pouch....I had a double shoulder and plenty left for a few more items. Anyways when cutting the knife goes through like hot butter one direction and the other direction it takes considerable effort to cut!,,so was wondering if there is a preferable way to cut for the belt( i had to go from right shoulder to left due to length),, but just picked a spot not blemished for the other pieces...I know i saw it somewhere here but can't find. Once again, this is a tremendous site and am very appreciative,,thanks! I guess hoslters and gun belts would be my passion,,just a couple more ?? What weight leather and do you use same size thread for cartridge loops?? And which is the bettter cut or is it personal prefference and budget consideration??

Edge Kote & Dye
jc3persons replied to jc3persons's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
Well i understand the meaning of suck old style and todays meaning, and can only guess you don't like edge coat,,being i have only the 1 belt and holster to judge by, can say that when reworking the edge of the belt, edge coat scraped of like paint and am considering just dying edge with my plentiful supply of dyes ( 1 bottle of eco flo canyon tan,,lol lol)..BTW the sun popped out here in so. texas and my tree stump ought to be dry enough to varnish and bring in the house, in mean time i bought a 2-3.00 cutting board and having the solid heavy desk to punch on has made diff of day and nite!! Gracious hombre.. -
Thanks to bob park info on edge finishing able to salvage my first gun belt( for me anyway)...Was wondering what the difference between dye and edge kote are and when do you dye,,,wet leather or dry?? Great site for learning...Been 40 years since i picked up my tools and everything i did back then was precut,,got the yen to design and make from the get go,probably would have quit if hadn't found the site,, thanks

Cutting And Saddle Stitch Punch Surface
jc3persons replied to jc3persons's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
thanks,,,i have several live oaks stump sections that i saved for whatever when neighbor cleared lots in 07,,will debark and debug and set on bench for a try(providing better half doesn't mind),,might shop walmart for end grain cutting blocks also,,great site for learning, thanks again -
What is best surface to cut the leather on,,,and best surface for punching a diamond saddle stitch punch,,and the best surface for drive hole punchs...I have looked the available stuff at Tandy's and can't decide if i need a granite, poly cutting board ,or a poundo board or is it all three...I am working on small typing table with phone book and a couple small pieces of leather about a half inch thick..As hard as the punching is there has got to better way ,,i have a heavy 3' by 5' wood desk which will become my work table soon..I am making some gun holsters and belt primarily and my first one came out 100% functional,,,but about 65% to 75% in apperance...I am using 7-9 oz.leather, 2 piece for the belts and a combination smooth side and pig skin lining for the holster... I know simple question but would appreciate advice from some long timer as this is first attempt..thanks,,have picked up some good stuff from just reading the forums!
