That's interesting. To make my duck totes I use 8/9oz harness leather for the main strap and my Atomstack A30 cuts through it in 3 passes at 800mm/min at 80% power. I will usually have to do a little trimming of some fibers but it cuts everything pretty cleanly. I use 5/6oz vegtan for key chains and it cuts cleanly at 800mm/min at 70% power. Where I usually run into issues is cutting softer chrome tanned leather. My hypothesis was that the denser leather and lighter color absorbed the laser light better and then yielded a cleaner cut. I only use the focus piece included with the laser to focus my beam.

Maybe your laser head is too far away.

Very well could be that the laser head is still just a tad far away. I’ll continue to play with it.

That's a mighty good sheath design. Clean, functional, classy. I also like that clip. It looks like it is reversible for left or right wear. Is that correct? It also looks like it would work good in a boot. So where did you get that clip?

Thank you! Yes, the clip is ambidextrous. Ulti-Clip. Got mine from Amazon IIRC.

Love the design and your stitching looks really good!

Where did you get that pocket clip? That's a really cool design!

I love my lasers for cutting out patterns! The exactness and repeatability can't be beat!

Thanks so much! Yes, I agree 100% with you on cutting out patterns and stitching holes now (when the settings are right, lol). At first I did not really like the larger stitch holes, but they are growing on me, and make stitching so much easier. Still a lot of challenges to deal with like the singed edges, smell and soot getting on stitching thread, but I'll still take it......

The clip is an Ulti-Clip Slim 3.3....

What does the belt loop look like?

You made a very nice case!!

but 400 bucks for a pry bar and who in the heck carries one every day? jeez I'm doing something wrong.

Thanks so much! To clarify, I paid drop price for these pry bars at $80 a piece over the last year or so, lol.  Still quite expensive for a small pry bar. It’s the brand name that makes them expensive. Former Navy Seal owned company, and they make pretty awesome stuff. I am more of a collector than user honestly…

    Lol…

When I did a lot of camping, what is now called 'wild camping' in the UK I used a small, 6 inch, crows foot wrecking/pry bar. Multitude of uses. The hook end, or the eye on these, for pulling up the rope stakes, the flat end for splitting small logs, by putting the flat in a crack and either hitting the bar or twisting it. And for bashing that tin of beans because you forgot the tin opener!

When I was a beek we used a tool called a scraper, a kind of flat pry bar. Sure wish no I had a belt sheath for carrying that, I lost quite a few in long grass, even when painted fluorescent yellow!

Might be a market for someone to make belt sheaths for these

    That’s a cool one!

  5. Hello all. I recently noticed that when I cut out 9-10 Ounce Leather, I will set my xTool D1 Pro 20Watt machine to around 4.5 on the focus side and use the little kickstand gauge as well to get correct focal height, etc.  I typicall run the machine on mm/m settings and set to 700mm/m at 100% intensity for 2-3 passes. Most of the time, the laser has burned all the way through. When I do the same steps for 6-7 ounce veg tanned, the first pass seems to really burn the around the line and it takes 5-6 passes , and still sometimes does not cut through all the way. I do use the xTool air assist also. I was thinking that maybe it is just a denser fibered leather and thats why. Anyone else had this issue before?

What is the color of the second one and color of thread? Nice color combo.

Thank you. The second one is in Fiebings Dark Chocolate Professional Oil Dye. Thread is Ritza Tiger Thread in Havanna Brown.

    I won't give the location . . . but I was in two different "leather" shops last week . . .

Much of it was vinyl glued to fabric to stiffen it . . .

Leather coats were absolute junk . . . my Pakistan cafe racer jacket I paid a hundred and a half for . . . was three times the quality of that junk . . . and they wanted twice my Pakistan price.

Belts looked like that pressed together and glued stuff from China . . . single layer . . . with buckle . . . no design . . . 26 bucks each and up

I was almost ashamed to mention in that company I work in leather . . . afraid someone would mistake me for them . . .

    May God bless,

    Dwight

Reminds me of the "Custom Handmade Damascus Knives" at flea markets and shows, where the "damascus pattern" somehow does not transfer into the exposed sharpened edge, and every knife has the same color and pattern. Yeah, they are knives, but not custom handmade damascus knives, lol.........

Yes. Not sure what you call them in your part of the world, but I use ' Easy Snaps' . Google that. They are  a four piece. They come in two  sizes, assorted colours etc.  and you may need a setter.   I use them on Kangaroo leather wallets , kangaroo  being a thin leather.  Might just be what you're looking for.

    HS

Thanks, the setter set I bought for the segma snaps (line 16), said easy snap setter on it and the anvil had two cap seats. I use the larger seat. Maybe you have the next size smaller easy snap. Thanks again.

  9. A magician friend asked me to make him a few coin pouch samples for his store. I have made a few samples and we have been going back and forth on details. I told him segma snaps look better on small pouches like this. Problem I am having is that the outside female setter is deforming the socket because of the thinner leather I assume. Maybe a bad setter, IDK. I think using washers will take up too much valuable space to use. Is there a better snap for this? These measure about 2” by 2.25” completed.

Good job,I like it. I started drilling my stitching holes and now use an .8 mm punch chucked in my drill press.

I like the results. Makes for much more enjoyable stitching and cleaner looking results.

Thank you! Good idea with the chucked punch! I like using my traditional leatherwork tools, and still use my Weaver stitching chisel set a lot, but shamefully these holes were laser cut at .065" diameter. Saves me a lot of headache. I still drill holes as well from time to time, but the drill bits tear the leather sometimes and leaves nasty little fragments....

Very nice! It's a shame about the snap. I originally used a 4 penny nail in a drill press that I file to a point. Just about the perfect size for larger thread.

Yeah, I was too far along to redo the whole thing. I sent photos to the guy and pointed it out. He was fine with it. That nail idea sounds like a winner!

The dye job looks great! Super even!

The snap would be very frustrating to me. I hate getting to the end of project and something stupid causes a flaw!

Your stitching looks really good. I'm not a fan personally of the larger round holes but everybody has their methods. Great work!!

Thank you! I have gotten to where I don’t mind the larger holes anymore. Makes it so much easier to stitch without pliers. Plus I generally drill out the holes on thicker items like this, but my small dremel bit sometimes flexes and ruins the piece, coming out the side.

    It looks great!!

how did you figure the thickness of the axe?

Thank you! I had him send me photos looking down the blade from head to butt. Appeared to be about 1/4” I think. I did double welt thickness……
