  1. Michael, thank you. I'll check them out! Spence, The facility where I train my dogs uses 6ft leashes for training. Anything shorter is not good for that purpose. we use chain collars. I know some conformation people but they use chain collars also. I am sure the leather collars would be fun to make and I have some ideas, but I have no idea where I would market it. I've been looking at Etsy to sell some of the stuff I make but there are so many listings and I see the same listings by other people sitting there for ever. I'd much rather do some custom work than produce something to throw on Etsy and hope it will sell one day. I'll might give it a shot though. my main goal is to make some money so I can buy tools and carving leather for practice. I am not really trying to run a profitable business at this point. thank you for all the suggestions!
  2. :-) I do not know anyone who could make a use of a leather collar and I am sure not set up for selling it at the shows or other places. the only request I have is for 6' leashes, technically I could make 4' leads, but again, I have no idea who would use them.:-( my personal interests are in carving and knife sheaths and english bridle is no use. if I decide to make collar I wouldn't 8-10 oz be too thick to double for a collar and kind of boring in one layer?
  3. thank you. I talked to them. but it seems that I only will be able to use about 1/3 of the side that way. Have no idea what to do with the rest:-( I don't know anyone who needs a leather collars and because neither latigo nor english bridle can be carved I hate to have such a big waste.
  4. hello, I want to make some latigo leashes. the question I have is : do they have to be cut straight? meaning that I need to find a hide long enough or can they be cut in a circle kind of like a lace out of the roo? I need to make 6ft leashes (need 7 ft to make a handle and back braiding) that are 5/8" wide. and would like to have as little waste as possible. thanks!
  5. thank you so much for the help! here is where I was looking at: http://www.wickett-craig.com/index.php/leathers/pricing they have belt and oiled and belt comes in 3 different grades, and I got totally confused. for oiled latigo they have 8-10 and 10 -12 which one? also this might be a silly question but would you normally cut leads in a straight line or in the circle like the lace? I need them 5/8" width and 6 ft. and is there anything I need to ask for when ordering to make sure I can cut them that long if I have to make straight cuts?
  6. Hello, I would like to make some latigo leashes. I've never made anything like this before. It will be a training leash so the design is very simple, but I have a couple questions about the leather. I would like them to be 5mm thick what weight of leather it will equate to 11-12? also I need to make sure I can make 6 ft leashes plus handle so I guess I will need to be able to cut out 7ft strips out of it. Am I looking for the side or a back? I looked at one supplier and they had oiled latigo and belt latigo, I assume I will need a belt kind, am I correct? whats the difference? any suggestions for the suppliers? also, I assume I need some sort of the beveller to bevel all the length to make the off a bit, not a lot but make it more comfortable to hold in the hand? thank you for your help!
  7. I ordered the Al's book yesterday. I also was wondering if I can bind the two sides with contact cement , then mold it, dye it and then stitch it. Not sure how strong the contact cement's bond is , whether it will withstand wetting and stretching it over the mold.
  8. thank you! maybe I was thinking in the right direction I was wondering if I could make a mold from polymer clay as I don't have tools to carve wood to make molds. anyone had used something like that? I figured that way, somehow I might be able to create a mold so I can mold only one half at a time
  9. well, they did what I thought they would do - they molded it after it was stitched together. Does it mean it was dyed before they molded it? I just thinking that if I stitch it first and then dye it, they stitching will be all colored over. So it seems that I need to mold only one side at a time and stitch later or maybe there is a way to bind two sides together temporarily during molding? also what weight and type of leather would be good for this. I understand it should be veg tanned.
  10. Hello, I just finished a lead from the kangaroo for a friend, I was wondering if it can/should be conditioned before the use. and if so what kind of conditioner is the best?
  11. hello! I would like to make a cigar case my inspiration is this one ( the first after the humidor) http://www.turtlemoon.com/acord/catalog/cigarcases.htm I hope that someone could answer a few questions on how to get started. in which order the work should be done? carve first, then wet form, then dye? I assume that in order to wet form it I should stich it first, but then the stitching will get colored as well. if I stitch last then how would I wet form just half of it? if I carve first would the carving be damaged during the forming process as the leather will have to be wetted again? thank you!
  12. I would to make a cigar case. here is my inspiration ( the second down, right after the humidor) :-) http://www.turtlemoo.../cigarcases.htm well, I;ve never done anything like this so I have lots of questions and hoping that someone could help me to get started. 1) what is the order in which the work is done? painting with acrylic or dying the case? 2) is painting done over died leather or not? 3) what kind of finish was done on this case to get such a nice warm brown color? 4) sealant ? is it applied all over the piece after it completed or just the painted stuff? I know it's a lot of questions but if someone at least point me to some books or maybe tutorials that could help me get started I would greatly appreciate it. thank you!
  13. I figured it out!:-) yesterday I was about to punch a hole in the wall from frustration and today it just worked. I still don't know what it's called, but I know how to do it:-) thanks everyone!
  14. This is driving me crazy. I need to replace the snap bolt on this leash, I took it apart and now I can't put it back together, does anyone know how to tie this one or what it's called so I can look it up somewhere? mail.google.com.htm
  15. I want to make a knife sheath and looking for a 9-10 oz double shoulder. can someone suggest a good source in the states. thanks!
  16. Thank you Brian! The biggest problem I have, that you cannot see in the picture is that I "twist" the braid. if I hang the leash you can see how the strip of color slowly rotates around the center. I thought I figure out how not to do it while working on last paracord leash I've made, but I guess not:-( luckily it's not very visible when you actually use the leash, otherwise I would have to toss it out as it would drive me crazy.!:-) First problem with metallic lace was that the beveling it exposed the black edges. Then as I was braiding, I was using liquid saddle soap as indicated in the book I have, making the lace wet caused the black color to rub on my hands, it also colored the edges of the blue lace black. I really want to figure out how to cut my own lace at this point. Yuliya
  17. thank you Brian, yes it was spool lace. Anyway, here is what came out of it and my first attempt, also I have to say that this was first and last time I used metallic colored lace, I didn't like it at all.
  18. The beveler finally arrived in the mail yesterday, so I was very excited to give it a try. This is my first time dealing with lace or beveling. To my disappointment I found out that the lace varies in width. I really struggled beveling it as it had thinner and spongy sections, I ended up adjusting the width on the beveler back and forth as I was going. It was very frustrating as when the lace would become wider again I would be taking too much off, before I realize that I need to adjust again. Is the difference in width of the lace a norm and what is the best way of handling it?

    Using Cores

Interesting. I have her first book and she doesn't really talk about cores in there. I was wondering if it is possible to use some kind of knot to reinforce the snap to brain connection in cases when leather is folded over the snap rather then back braided. Something that goes through the braid and over the snap again so at the end it has more than 2 strands of leather going over it. something like the rein/ring knot, but I am not sure. anyone knows of a kind of knot that can be used for that purpose?
  20. Thanks Megabit! that's the one I was talking about.

    Using Cores

Shannon, thank you very much for your answer! I agree about the paracord core. One of my friends sent me a picture of her leash that she purchased somewhere with the paracord inside, I thought it looked very uneven. of course it's hard to say much from a photo. I held a couple of roo leashes in my hand in the last couple of weeks, only one truly impressed me, but it was braided with about 1/4"thick strands, maybe it had something to do with it:-) I actually really like your leashes. I've seen bunch of photos of leashes made by different people since the time I started looking into it and I think yours are some of the best I've seen out there, at least what I can see from the pictures:-) what is a "push together" connection? I was thinking about using small snap bolts, you know things that regular leashes have, but small.:-) also how wide lace do you use for your 4 strand leash? And for the thicker leashes I assume you just pull your strands upbraided through the beads right, because it seems to me that 6 or 8 strands braid will be way too thick to put beads on. Do you use real sinew? because I couldn't find real sinew strings only fake ones:-) Yuliya
  22. Ok, I just read through the comments to the video and he said he made it himself. I guess will have to ask my husband for help:-)
  23. Bernie's video how to make a beveled for roo lace from wood
  24. I want to make the beveled that was shown in the video. Could someone tell me what can be used as the brass piece? I can't even imaging where to start looking for something like that:-)
  25. I was thinking that if the one leash I am going to make will come out good, then I would consider buying a hide and cutting my own and then maybe buying pre-cut lace for the second color. would it be possible to mix pre-cut lace and my own lace? I was looking at the australian strander, I really liked it in one of the bernie's videos, will make his beveler. But I will have to make my own splitter or not do splitting at all, because splitters seem to be most expensive tools to buy. would you mind pointing me to the one you made? Also, somebody suggested in some other threads that if you buy good quality hide, you wouldn't need a splitter, is it true? What would consider a good quality hide? I saw some labeled 1grade. and how think should that hide be?
