Hello everyone, Some of you might already know that I am currently working on a Y-harness for my dog. During my research for this project, I noticed a recurring problem: many people try to build their own harnesses but miss several critical points. At the same time, there are surprisingly few good tutorials that explain not only how to build a harness, but also why certain design choices matter. This guide is my attempt to change that. You are very welcome to contribute—whether by adding points I may have missed or by correcting information if something turns out to be inaccurate. This guide is not intended for training purposes, provides no medical …

Focus is on large dogs and lining 8-9 oz tooled leather tops. I have 2-3 oz veg tan leather that seems tough as blazes (yet soft like Herman Oak is in any thickness) and can still get more at the great price. But do any of you have experience in abrasion wear for such linings, with dogs? Would you recommend a different lining, like some synthetic? I have this 2-3 oz for lining belts. I'd probably go 3-4 oz lining in a perfect world (like the rodeo belt I watched made) but the deal on the 2-3oz was sooo much more affordable. Soft and super tough but I know nothing of abrasion resistance over a bit of time. Thanks for your thoughts. Jeff i…

Recently I made my first piece for sale. A random guy stopped me on my way out of Lowe’s (big chain hardware store in the US, for those not familiar) to ask me where I got my dog’s leash, since I had her with me. When I told him I made it myself, he immediately asked how much I would charge to make one. I worked up a quote and made him a leash very similar to my dog’s leash. Sadly, I took only this one picture of it before handing it over. Next project was a collar for my dog with her name carved in it. Very simple, no backgrounding, and somewhat messy lettering—definitely doesn’t hold a candle to what I’ve seen on here that I used for ideas; but it’s adequate f…

Hi everyone! I'm new here and new to the leather world I want to know if there's any website or youtube channel that can help me starting out. Also I wanted to ask how I can create this type of lead, without stitches holding the clipper and with a secondary color added Thank you in advance!

Not much leather work here but it was something I needed. After I "retired" from the Engineering BS we opened a dog boarding and grooming kennel as it seemed to go hand in hand with my hobby of dog showing and breeding. Well after 20 years of use our last original kennel slip lead finally decided to give up the ghost. I always have liked the English style kennel slip leads but they are now costing about $20 CAD plus for something sort of half decent in 1/2" diameter and $40 CAD for a proper spliced 5/8" double braided nylon. I personally don't like the feel of flat nylon or flat polyester leads or the leads made PVC coated webbing's like biothane and how they wo…

The mother of my daughters best friend has got a broholmer (an old Danish breed) Her collar was damaged and held together wit a simple cable strip, and I felt compelled to make a new collar for her. I measured the circumference of her neck using a paper napkin (I met the dog at a horse competition, so I didn't have a measuring tape with me) The hardware was made on board the ship out of heavy brass plate. The lining is made out of some old thin leather that was originally the upholstery of the couches on board. The real name of the dog is Isolde, but she is always called Solle, and I checked with the friend of my daughter and that was what she'd like on the…

I am wanting to make a long dog leash but not sure what leather I should use. Its for a Siberian husky, not sure of weight yet because he was skin and bones but now gaining weight every week. Shouldn't be much over 60 pounds. I found some 5/8' x 96" x 3.2 to 3.6mm thick Latigo strips. Is that thick enough for a leash? He doesn't pull much walking but if he hits on a smell he liks he squats low and pulls and there is no pulling him back.any help would be appreciated.
