Leather for dog leash

Recommended Posts

I am wanting to make a long dog leash but not sure what leather I should use. Its for a Siberian husky, not sure of weight yet because he was skin and bones but now gaining weight every week. Shouldn't be much over 60 pounds. I found some 5/8' x 96" x 3.2 to 3.6mm thick Latigo strips. Is that thick enough for a leash? He doesn't pull much walking but if he hits on a smell he liks he squats low and pulls and there is no pulling him back.any help would be appreciated.

I would go for at least 3/4" - 1" in width.  You can double up on the thickness by laminating it.  I would also put two handles on it...one lower so you can have him heel.  The other allowing him a little freedom.

that should easily work for your dog. I make mine 3/4" and 4mm for American Bullies they weigh about a 130 lbs. and pull like the dickens. I've owned a husky also and they don't pull near as hard.
