Hello, I want to make my first pouch style holder for two 10-round Ruger 10/22 Magazines. I have been working with leather a few months, but have only made sheaths so far. I found the picture below on the Ruger site. Its going to be a fun project. Now for the questions...What is a good all-around leather weight for a pouch like this? I am a little unsure on the proper way to construct the pouches. In the picture it appears that the leather with the button flap to hold the magazine in the pouch is cut from a single piece of leather and glued/stitched to the belt loop leather. Then the pouch is cut from a single piece of leather and glued/stitched on top of the flap part mentioned above. What is the best method to attach the bottom part of the pouch. It looks like the leather was folded in side the pouch for the stitching. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I am making a sheath for an old knife and I would like to have a distressed look. I searched and read several threads about distressing the leather, but would like to know if there are finish products for this. I have skipped deglazing in the past and ended up with an old/distressed look. Is there any way to make this a little more extreme? Any tips are appreciated.

I have dyed a few projects using Fiebings dye (not Pro Oil) and they have all been too dark. I have been reading past topics on the forum and discovered I need to reduce the dye with denatured alcohol to lighten the color. I have some Fiebing med. brown, but I am not sure where to start with the mixing as far as 3:1, 4:1, etc. The link below is a picture of a Justin work boot. I would like to get something in the ballpark of that color. That looks really nice. What weight leather did you use? I am going to attempt something similar. I may use a D-ring where the swivel is used and move the swivel to the lead. I'd love to see more pics of the collar if you have them.

I finally had a little time and had good results with the safety skiver. I lightly clamped the end with needle nose pliers and then used light wrist pressure to bend. I did this evenly across the cutting area. There was a big improvement on the first test. Thanks for all the replies!

I know this is a real dumb question, but I wanted to ask before I start bending on this tool. I bought one of the cheap safety skivers and I do not believe it is working as it should. When I attempt to remove leather I can only get it to remove the loose pieces on the back and I end up with something like a leather fuzz. The videos I have watched online show them removing a thin piece. I am thinking about bending the safety bar slightly so the blade can get more contact with the leather. Has anyone had to adjust similar to this before? They are cheap and buying another is not a problem. I don't have a local seller so I have to order and I really don't want to wait on the shipping. Thanks for any info.

Thanks Dink. I do have a drill press. That will probably be the best route for me. I might add a belt sander later. It always seems like I could use one on projects.

From my research I have found that many people are using a stationary belt sander on their edges. I do not have one of these, but I do have a bench grinder. Will this work with a fine grit wheel or is the speed of the wheel going to be a problem??

I didn't see an edit button to add this to my prior post so here it is. You mentioned that your finished goods are used for display. If you do plan to keep them and use for display then I would not include them in inventory. I would expense those amounts as a selling expense. For the items that are not full/complete, I would use a reasonable estimate. The key is to be reasonable. You could also expense your scrap. For example, if a hide has a measurable amount to get a reasonable estimate of the value being discarded. I am just a hobbyist and do not do this for a living. I work in accounting and wanted to share my thoughts. Good Luck!

Eldorado- From a tax standpoint a loss is a good thing. You will pay taxes on the profit when that occurs. I do not use Turbotax so I can only make an assumption about the inventory questions. I do know Turbotax walks people through step by step. With that said, I would bet Turbotax is asking those questions to calculate Cost of Goods Sold(COGS). The formula is Beginning Inventory + Purchases - Ending Inventory = COGS.

I am just getting started and want to add an edger to my tools. I want a size #1 and the less expensive models like Craftool come in size 2+. I found these size 1 edgers on Ebay that are made in Japan. Has anyone tried a Seiwa?. I am assuming the cheap Craftool models are being made somewhere in Asia also so the "Made in Japan" doesn't really bother me. . Thanks for any info.

I have been reading these forums for awhile and finally decided to make my first post. I am looking for suppliers that sell leather shoulders in small quantities. I found Texas Knifemaker's Supply and it appears that they sell buy the sq. ft. The other places I have found sell in 10 plus sq. ft. All the pro's say don't go cheap on the leather so I'd like to find something decent for a couple of sheaths I am going to attempt. Thanks in advance for any info.
