  1. My first pair of cuffs were lost in the mail :( but I'm making a second attempt. My second attempt at tooling with a different (slightly more complicated) design and obviously still learning my tools. 9" long x 1.75" wide Veggie tan tooled inside. Black suede outside.

Outside of my finished cuffs (the second pair). I like the asymmetrical look, even though they are a matched set.

  3. From the album: Secret Message Cuff - 2nd Pair

Wrapped up these cuffs despite a few glaring issues: • I can't set rivets or snaps straight TO SAVE MY LIFE *ugg* • Tooling is not deep enough or clean enough • Missing the proper tools for edging

  4. I did end up mixing a very small amount of clove oil with beeswax and extra virgin olive oil to make my own leather conditioner. That was on my first project (which has since been lost). But I'm planning on using the same mix again! I didn't know about "dry" oils. Thank you very much for the info!

This is after the first night of tooling. I have placed the hardware in its prospective locations (to be duplicated on the left as well.) I have a feeling I might be doing my casing wrong. Not often enough or not enough water... or Im just not striking hard enough on my tools. I did notice that the tool marks darkened slightly over night. I am thinking about adding a subtle dye to help the designs pop (or more tooling, but I don't want to overwork it and ruin it.) I'm probably going to avoid paint because I don't want to cover up the leather, just accent it. Still have to seal the finished pieces, glue on the backing, punch the holes and add the hardware.

  7. I've always loved the smell of leather. Perhaps it has something to do with the leather jacket my father always wore when I was a child. But the scent evokes feelings of strength and caring. My first leather tooling project was a pair of hidden message cuffs, I have a few pics in my gallery. I admit to being intimidated by the leather blank! My design ended up being very simple and just a test of the materials for me, a familiarizing process. Once completed, I had a list of things I had learned the hard way. (But that's how I like it.) • fingernails • layout • spellcheck • Despite the multiple mistakes and corrections, I deemed them acceptable in their initial purpose - a gift. I shipped them out May 7th and have not seen or heard of them since And those, my friends, are my tooling tears. (Certified mail all the way next time.)
  8. Hello All, I'm really enjoying my first leather working project, though I have already learned a few things! • Don't have long fingernails • Measure out the entire design INCLUDING hardware • Check and double check spelling and dates These are a pair of cuffs with a message on the inside. I'm almost done, just need to finish up the edges some how (without an edger or gum - I know it's a bit of a pickle.) Here's a link to my gallery and a couple specific pics.

    Secret Message Cuff

My "first" leather project that isn't with scraps. A pair of wrist cuffs: tooled leather on the inside, thinner black on the outside with a snap clasp. NOTE: This pair was lost in the mail :(

Debating how to finish this edge - melted beeswax applied with cotton dabber.

Initially put in the wrong date (check, double check, and check again!) - this is my conversion from a 5 (V) to a 9 (IV).

Didn't anticipate the snaps infringing on the design, had to leave off one of the second set!

  14. From the album: Secret Message Cuff

Applied a simple recipe of 1 oz melted beeswax combined with 1/2 extra virgin olive oil and a couple drops of clove oil. I will have to reapply for clove oil, as the scent is indistinguishable over the leather. Then glued the black recycled skirt sueded leather to the back with Eco Flow Leather Glue. Still need to finish the edges... probably with some more of the conditioning mix above.

  17. @Jon • I've got my first pic up... thinking about adding a little more tooling. I have no scraps So I will take your advice and use the olive oil and add the clove minimally. The stitching sounds like a nice touch, If I have beeswax to run the thread through, can I use upholstery thread? @Kevin • I got a bottle of Woodweld Contact Cement
  18. From the album: Secret Message Cuff

Sparsely tooled secret message (partially because I have not scrap and was afraid to mess it up, partially because less is more). Method: Cut, wet, beveled cut edge, lightly traced with knitting needle, finished with awl and leaf stamp. Next: Treat tooled leather with a combination of extra virgin olive oil and clove oil. Glue sueded trim with Woodweld Contact Cement. Trim excess. Apply snaps (cover?). Seal edges (beeswax?).

  19. Hello All. Looking for anyone with experience using essential oils, specifically Clove Oil, for finishing a tooled piece... Would I need to use a carrier oil like the preferred Neetsfoot or Olive?

  22. Hello all. I'm embarking on my first leather project - my knowledge is spotty at best but the following is an outline of my plans. Tools: Tooling Leather Suede Snap Set Nature Tooling Set Rubber Cement Clove Oil I've already cut the tooling leather and created my simple message. Can I use the clove oil to "finish" the tooled leather? I really like the smell. I plan on adhering the black suede to the outside so that the cuff will appear plain black, but the tooled message will be against the wrist. Will the rubber cement work? A simple punch and snap will finish this project, I hope. What do you think? Have I cut too many corners?
