New member in search of new supplier. Back in the 60's, working my way through college making sandals, I used to get spectacular double butts from Marap in NY. Getting back in the business after retiring from 40 years of engineering, I bought the same leather from Hide House in their old San Dimas location. Hide house no longer handles that leather, and Marap doesn't list a website and they probably don't carry it any more. After using up the last 20 hides that I had, I have looked for another supplier with no luck. I have purchased double butts and double backs from Herman Oak, Zack White, and Weaver. Thought the leather is OK, it is not the same as the stuff I was using. For one, it was true "10 oz", measuring 0.16 inches thick with a micrometer. The hides averaged about 20 sq. ft.. On top of that, the flesh side was almost as smooth as the top grain, and the top grain was absolutely smooth all over with no bumps or skin lines. The best part was the way it cut and folded. It cut like butter, and you could fold it over without it cracking. I have no idea where to turn to get leather like this again, and I am terribly frustrated. Any suggestions?
Thank you,
Bo Dillingham
