Cheryl the dog collar looks great! I can sew close to the edge with my sewing machine, but I need to get a new foot so it won't get caught on the beads. I'll have to take this new info and try to make some tack like this

Thank you WinterBear for that information! It sounds like that would be a great way to do the kind of stone/bead work I would like to do. I have never heard of tigertail wire, but I'm going to go look into it right now! Thanks again!

Thanks WinterBear, I know I have a wallet that has those beads attached with what looks like fishing line, they ended becoming a little loose though. I don't see why that wouldn't work if I could figure out a way to secure them tightly. My main concern is making sure they won't be easy to break off.

Thanks Cheryl, I was thinking wire too. Some of the tack I have seen though does't have enough room around the edges to sew a backing on around the beads, so I wasn't sure if maybe there was another way to do it?

Injured my knee again. No riding, but I guess this means more time for leather projects!

Hi, I want to attach large stone beads to leather tack, for example turquoise stone nugget beads, and I'm having difficulty figuring out the beast way to attach them. Does anyone have a way that works well and holds the beads on tightly? I attached a picture of some tack that has the stones attached, I'm thinking they used wire but I'm not sure. If anyone has some advice I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks in advance! - Jaclynn

Same here! I've been lucky enough to do some award tack for a couple barrel racing series and I love it. I'll post some pictures of the stuff in a bit. I bet it would take a while sewing it all by hand! I kept my eyes open on Craigslist and found a Techsew GA5-1R that was only used for a couple months for $800. It took several months of "looking" but it was worth it. It sews beautifully, I love it! Yea it's always a bit nerve racking having to buy a whole hide sight unseen. I've been debating whether or not to with some Herman Oak Bridle Leather. I used a pair of thick batwing chaps for a year, they were pretty supple. I'm sure if they were a little stiffer than what you would like you could put on a conditioner to soften them up. I really like Bick's leather conditioner. But, like you said I'm sure with more leather it'll seem different. I'll go check out the pictures you just added.

You can never have too many books, right?! The chaps should be fun! I still need to do a pair. They are on my "to do" list. A breast collar is my next project to tackle as well. I've been wanting to make one to match a headstall I made and just haven't been able to find the time yet. Who needs sleep right? I agree with you about the tack stores. All the tack seems to look the same as it has for the past ten years!
