What would an easy first attempt be? and any video tutorial showing an easy first attempt? Also what tools should I order for my first try?

I would like to make a leather bag with pockets to hold art supplies

I'm interested in learning a new skill and I love leather goods but have a few questions. I would really like to be able to make mens bags. How much moneys worth in tools would I be looking at to make them? How much moneys worth of materials would go into a bag? How long would it take to learn enough to make something like a bag that looks good? Do you need a full on sewing machine?
