  1. Not sure if this is the right place to ask this. I am looking for someone to make a leather backpack or one to buy. I carry lots of stuff everyday to and from work and everywhere else I go. Things like a laptop, Ipad, cords and different charges for the electronics plus my daily carry stuf like pocket knife, flashlight and leatherman tool. Along with different files and other work related stuff. I have worn out a couple of the laptop bags by Targus and thought maybe something in leather would look a lot better and last a lot longer. But I have searched the internet for leather backpacks and most that I have found are not really big enough. I did find a canvas and leather bag, which looked good and would be ok but it did not have any padding to keep the electronics safe. So I am looking for someone that might make backpacks or some ideas of what might work. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks in advance for any advice.
  2. Thanks for the guidance Bob and I appreciate the post for the articles, but I can not access them. You have to be a member of the PSLAC to be able to see them. That is some awesome looking work you do.
  3. Thanks for the replies. I had not thought of covering a binder with leather, makes sense though. Any other hints or tricks to covering one? Thanks again for the help.
  4. I have a new project that I have never tackled before. I have some leather experience with making leather sheaths for the knives I make. But the other day my wife came up with a new project for me. She is putting together our best recipes that we have made and some that her mother and my mother gave us years ago and she wants them put in one or two big notebooks. Well she got the idea that I could make a leather notebook to keep all the recipes in and one day hand them down to our Granddaughters that have really takened up cooking. Has anyone ever done anything like this. She wants something that would eventually become a keepsake. I will say that I kind of like the idea of making something like this to pass on, but just not to sure how to proceed. Any ideas and or advice on where to get the parts I need and how to do would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  5. First of all I am real new to leather work, I have only done about 4 knife sheaths. I have a friend that wants me to try and make him a eyeglass case. He wanted it out of 3-4 oz leather with a lining of suede. So to put on a lining all you do is just glue in to the flesh side of the leather, correct. But then what do you do with the exposed edges, just leave them alone and try to blend them in with the other edges? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  6. Hello and welcome. Where in Texas are you located at?
  7. I realize that this thread is about a year old but the program irfanview is not free anymore or at least when I went to the link it wanted to charge me to download the program. Not that is was real expensive, just wanted to let people that I could not get it free.

    Hello

Just thought I would say hello to everyone. I am not really new here just new to posting here, if that makes sense. I have tried to do some reading from time to time here and just wanted to say that there seems to be some really talented people here. I just recently gave leather work my first try with a couple of sheaths for a couple of knives that I made. I managed to get them done and they looked ok, but I need to learn allot more. So if I start bugging everyone with to many questions just tell me to shut up and go sit in a corner somewhere. Thanks in advance.
  9. I have been trying to read about making some of my own dye for leather. The only thing I make are knife sheaths. I have read some stuff about using walnuts, just putting them in some water and boil them down. Some writings mention about putting a setting agent in with the mixture, but I am not sure what that would be or how much of it you need. I also read somewhere about even using pecan hulls to make a dye. Anybody have much experience with doing this or is just not worth the time to do. Not really meaning to save money but meaning that they do not work very well or do not last like the stuff you buy. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  10. Still very new to this myself, but I was told to make sure the leather was damp before applying the dye or stain so it would not wick it into an area you did not want it to go.
