KATE Yep, everything Kate said! and don't forget, if you have a blog somewhere else, link to it from here. It's easy. Your blog will get more traffic, and our visitors will enjoy the variety. Please keep the links family-friendly, folks. We reserve the right to remove anything we determine violates our terms-of-service agreement, or anything else in the best interests of our members. If you have a storefront website and/or are willing to ship, a "Directory" ad here on LW could help you attract more business and improve your site ranking and traffic. Many people come here to browse and shop. CD- you have a fabric and notions store? I see slightly higher prices at the mom & pop shops, but they seem to make up for that in customer service. As a consumer, I will go out of my way to deal with someone I trust and doesn't treat me like another transaction. Click on "Directory" on the toolbar and look at what we have collected so far. You have to create an account separate from the board (security reasons) and all plain text ads to vendors are FREE through February. Hope this helps someone. Johanna

I used to design my own cards and then print them on cardstock. Ink is too expensive, and the cardstock isn't as professional looking. www.vistaprint.com lets you design whatever you want, right in your browser. I got nice quality cards at a good price, and the shipping was nominal. They threw in a post it note pad and some magnets with my same theme to entice me to buy more stuff from them. All I would need to do is log on to my account and reorder. Johanna

Not to change the subject, but someone should start a "making your shop a safer place for pets, kids and grownups" thread. How many of us have sharp edges exposed (I have exacto knives upside down in a jar- how dumb is that?) or chemicals that a pet or kid can get into? I have one dog I have to keep out of the scrap bin, or suffer the consequences. What things in our shops could we do differently to reduce the risks of accidents or problems when we host visitors? I remember chasing toddlers...hoo, boy. I get a little break now that there is only one grandchild so far- glad you have a great grandkid to play with. Glad your g grandkid has great grandparents to play with. Johanna

Ohio Travel Bag is well known for having hardware- all sorts of hardware, and other goodies, too. They have been dependable suppliers for leatherworkers as long as I can remember. Click here to order a NEW 2010 OTB catalog, or visit their site to browse online. PLEASE tell them leatherworker.net sent you! Johanna

Do not let pets (birds, cats and dogs) chew on veg tanned leather, and same with children. Besides the chemicals in the leather, there is a choking risk, and the leather itself is hard to digest if they should swallow it. It is probably not going to hurt the 3 year old who put a piece in her mouth for a moment when we weren't looking, but why take the chance? I have a dog that loves to chew on leather, and then his body rejects it from both ends. Not worth cleaning up. Maybe some of the vets can chime in with more specifics. Johanna PS some veggie tanned leather makes me break out in hives if I touch it. I would hate to see a toddler with a full blown allergic reaction.

Erroll, Perhaps post pictures of Billy's art and what you expect to get for each piece? Johanna

Dennis Lane has attempted to create a standard to measure horses. Maybe Denise ir Dennis himself can jump in and explain the card system better than I can. Johanna

Leather Things You Put In Your Pocket Or Carry With You.
Johanna replied to UKRay's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Next time I dump my purse, I'll take some pics. Luke- pocket items for a woman are different than pocket items for a man. I have everything I need in my purse to be away for a few days except my laptop. Ray, I stole the new emoticon. ~J -
I do like my Verizon broadband, but it's worthless at home because we can't get a reliable signal. When I travel, it has the advantage of not forcing me to use someone else's network (like a cafe or hotel) to get online, and in some cites, it's faster than my cable at home. I guess I'm a bit shocked by what you folks are paying for Internet service. My unlimited high-speed cable bill is only $35 a month! Just for grins and giggles, I checked the stats of LW and less than 5% of you connect with dialup. I can't imagine going back to dial-up, especially with the router and all the computers in the house that run off the router. Slow would get even slower. I just checked the speed of the cable today: 2678 kb/s download 856kb/s upload from a server in Toronto Check your speed here. Johanna

Leather Things You Put In Your Pocket Or Carry With You.

Magic money clips, make-up bags, cigarette cases, wallets, checkbooks, eyeglass cases, camera cases, cell phone holsters/cases, iPod cases, hair accessories, earrings, chokers, necklaces, medicine bags, watch fobs, keychains, compacts, address books, photo albums, flash drive sleeves, flashlight or knife holsters/cases, does that help at all? ~J -
How Do I Start A Blog On The Leatherworker.net?
Johanna replied to stelmackr's topic in Feedback and Suggestions
Easy, Bob! Click your name at the top right of the page and a drop down menu will appear. Choose "My Settings". At the top of the page is a row of tabs- click the Blog tab. The forum will ask you to agree to abide by the rules and you click "create" Voila! a blog. Members with blogs hosted elsewhere can link their blogs to LW directly also. I'm looking forward to seeing yours, Bob- I enjoy the PSLAC newsletters every month, too. Johanna -
Todd, Our Directory is less than two weeks old. We are trying to get the word out so that it fills up. Suppliers and vendors get a free standard ad for February, all leatherworkers can have a free ad forever, or they can upgrade to a more prominent ad display. Your ideas are all very good- but we're just starting out. This is our old list: http://leatherworker.net/suppliers.htm (Huge improvement, huh?) and we have three staff members working on the directory now, in between kids, jobs, and leatherwork. I hope everyone takes advantage of the free advertising and the Directory fills up quickly! See the blog section (Kate & Johanna) for more info on the Directory and how to use it to get found. Whether you are a leatherworker or a supplier to leatherworkers, our Directory will be THE place to get found on the Internet. LW hopes it keeps you all from having to get day jobs. Johanna

We did this already. Click the button on your toolbar that says "Directory". If you haven't registered your business, create an account and choose from the options. For the month of Feb. all vendor/supplier text ads are FREE. Johanna

When you open a thumbnail picture into the lightbox, scroll to the bottom right of the pic. You should see two options there- one to save and one to close the picture. Johanna

Midwest Spring Leather Show 2010
Johanna replied to howardb's topic in Special Events, Contests and Classes
Sorry I can't be a vendor yet, Brent, but I'll be there with my camera, and glad to lend a hand where I can. The Spring Shows have become a nice tradition. They are smaller shows than the IFoLG, but similarly styled. Plenty of friends and lots to talk about, too. I've been lucky that they have all been fairly "local" for me. If you've never been to the sand dunes in Michigan City, make sure you check them out while you are there. Awesome! Johanna -
I don't like thumb trackballs. All my thumb has to do is click and scroll. My three fingers control the ball, and my pinkie or ring finger right-clicks. My wrist is supported and straight (that's like a beanbag on top of a gel pad underneath). If you look closely you can see the scars where the 4 pins held my wrist together after i broke it. If it weren't for the track ball and support I know I'd have trouble. I also use a split keyboard, but that's just because I'm a crummy typist, not for ergonomics. ~J
