no hard feelings. It was just my two cents and subjective opinion. i`m thinking of buying "braiding fine leather" by David W. Morgan and any comments about this book are welcome. brgd Crow

Hi, Time to time when somebody asks directions to braiding books people mention 2 B. grants books together, Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding and how to make cowboy horse gear. But nobody mention that these books are almost identical- same pics and text, except" how to make cowboy horse gear" has a lot less pages, so as the information. There is only one different chapter: how make western saddle in "how to make...". So if you need a braiding book, the Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding is the way to go. All the informataion you need is there. I`m bringin it up because i bought both of them, at first Encyclopedia and then how to make... and i was really disappointed because i was expecting an book with different content. If i knew back then I would have spent these bucks on a different book. brgd Crow

hi The books explain, that you cut about 2" strip around the hide , make it wet and tighten it between some trees until dry. Then you get nice straight 2" strip to cut laces from. I tried it with 3 m strip and it totally curled up. It is like a solid tube now. What did i do wrong? Was the tension too much? best regards Crow

thanks for reply, got some idea of thickness. Actually my second question was which sides you bevel: flesh sides, opposite corners etc. I know the books recommend hairside corners, to prevent the sides rolling up as it dries. What is your prefered method? thanks for advance once more Crow

hi what is the common thickness of rawhide lace for braiding? And how do you bevel your rawhide laces? Crow

hi Jim, thanks for additional pics. I`m planning to make light changes in your design. I replace the wooden piece, where the lace slips on with 1" steel roll. I just think it might work better for me. i´ll keep you informes how it worked out. crow

thanks to everybody, the reason i showed up here was to get some encouragement, and that`s what i got, thank you all alot. Next i want to try how is it to work with rawhide, finished belly of snake whip and waiting my rawhide now. I sure let you know of progress when i`m so far. Knotnutz, i`m not sure what u mean by rolling sideways? Buying beveller has been in my mind for a while but it is a bit too expencive for sunday braider. I made one myself just need to get learn to use it. Does anyone have some close up pics of beveled lace? Would like to see how it should look like. I have general idea but is my idea correct or not. brgd Crow

Thanks Don. I haven`t held in my hand any real braiders work, so i`m learning only by books and pics in internet. But problem is, that it is rather hard to detect on pics how smooth it actually must be when finished. What i`m saying is that i don`t have any works to compare. Crow

thank you all for kind replys. As you noticed the laces of bosal are not beveled, but reason for this is that i didn`t know it, that this must be done before braiding. Crop looks better at this point. learning all the time. Crow

hi everyone, i`m new here in this forum and braiding at all. have done two works so far. First an bosal and secondly an riding crop, which i finished three weeks ago and is a gift for a riding instrucor, my very good friend. Let me know what you think and if you have some tips for me for my next projects. Have started an snake whip but still waiting for a rawhide i should have got weeks ago. best regards crow
