  1. Normally the backgrounding is done at the end of the work.  This allows you to make modifications, if needed, such as adding stems or leaves, or just filling a space differently than you had intended.  If you background first, you are locked in.  Do you know that as you tool, if the leather seems to be drying out too rapidly, you can lay it face down on the stamping surface for a few minutes and the surface will effectively re-wet itself?  I prefer to wet the surface lightly with a sponge, even if I have to wait for it to reach the desired moisture level.

Did a practice piece and waited to the very end to background:  I like the way it worked out.  Thanks for the pointer!

First time I did it your way, thinking the same thing you suggested.  Someone set me on a different path: now that I have done a couple, I'm going to go try it your way again, see how it works.

That is opposite of the suggestion I had received to background first so I could see where the shapes of leaves, etc are!  I'll give your way a try next time.  Also had no idea that placing it face down would cause it to re-wet, I've placed it upside down and covered with plastic when I have to step away from the work in the past, but have not noted it to re-wet.  I'll pay some attention to that and see how well it works for me.  Tooling is a pretty new thing for me - i did some stamping in November, then again in the May - June time frame.  My first floral carving was July 29th - so I have a lot to learn!  Thank you for your suggestions.
