bees wax will only hold cold liquids
-
got a cool metalic effect when i mixed coal black and mahogany dyes.
-
it happened by accident i used a comination of black and brown dye and coated with wax before i stiched it because i stiched it inside out, when i turned it rightside out it "aged" the leather so where it looked like i drug it behind my truck a little touch up and i was happy
-
i'm also a potter so i used wax resist (a very fluid wax) unlike beeswax or pitch (traditional sealers) i rubbed it in the leather (1 coat a day for 3 days) the leather soaked it in nicely and kept the leather plyable and waterproof i let a bass ale soak in it overnight and as a result i have only the lovely taste of ale don't know about rum (can't touch the hard stuff) the high proof stuff might break down the wax most surly would not use a hot beverage

had some scraps to experiment with started off as wine bag but decided to seal with wax so i could drink out of it good fun to make also found that tattoo stencils make great leather patterns does anyone have mug patterns made this one through trial and error and error

Walmart. kiwi black shoe leather dye and coated with black shoe wax (both found in shoe dept.) both are very cheap and very easy to use and also make the piece waterproof. -
basketweave holster
fowlball replied to fowlball's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
thanks. the cartridge loops are a bandaid to cover buggered up basketweave. i think your right, they do stick out too much. i've tried borders with weave but buthchered the work (more practice). is there a trick to bw borders? -
please critique
-
thanks, as you can see this is my first try at basketweave, i think it got better as i moved down the piece. i like the effect but it is a pain in the butt.
-
any advice?
-
thanks. being my first try i did not have proper materials so i used wood stain, coffee and 600 grit wet/dry automotive sandpaper to get the aged look and then coated it with tandy dye (bucks).
-
this was my first holster. the friend i made it for wanted a used/aged look so he would not look like the new buckaroo in the bunkhouse. i used 600 grit wet/dry sand papper to burnish the edges and distress the leather. i have to admit i have become a holster junkie now. great fun. thanks for the incouragment
