  1. So just use saddle soap instead of the deglazer, and the neetsfoot oil works instead of the dye prep?
  2. Newbie here trying to figure out what all I need to get. Do I need one or the other, or both? What are each used for? I have read on Fiebing's website, that deglazer cleans, and the dye prep prepares the leather, but if I am using neatsfoot oil or something first, do I deglaze first, then neetsfoot, then dye prep, then dye? I'm just confused as they have so many products and I'm not sure when/where to use them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  3. I make knives and make the sheaths with them, and so far have just left them plain, except for a stamp in the middle and maybe the persons last name stamped into it, but I want to start making much nicer looking sheaths by doing full stamping (basket weave/tri weave and border) and tooling. I plan on getting a good swivel knife, probably from Barry King unless y'all have a better recommendation, but would this set work for starting out and then upgrade as I need, or should I just buy them individually, or is there a better set that I should get? I don't want to spend too much on these stamps yet, as most of my money is going into woods and steel for the knives. Thanks for the help! http://www.ebay.com/itm/271966361674?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
  4. Anybody have a recommendation on which awl (brand) to get and where?
  5. Thanks for the reply. I have read that the Tandy one is bad. I have starter level equipment and am trying to upgrade now so I definitely don't want to make a lateral move (better tool for the job, but a bad tool). I have no problem sharpening, as I sharpen the knives I make, so I'm good there. also, I think the site is down that you linked to. It comes up as a database error. I tried to search for it and get into it that way and got the same error. They may just be updating it now. I'll try later.
  6. Hey everybody. I've been a member here for a little bit, but haven't posted much (once in the new members section). I am currently in St. Kitts (from Texas) for vet school. I make knives as a hobby and make sheaths for them. So far they have been very poor quality, but I'm improving on each one so I'm happy with them. I have been using a punch to make the stitching holes with this: https://www.tandyleather.com/en/product/stitching-hole-spring-leather-punch I want to improve on my stitching and want to get an awl. From all the searches I've done, they say a Douglas is the best, but I'm not sure where to get one. If anybody could help or recommend a different one, I would greatly appreciate it. I have most basic tools and plan on upgrading gradually, but want to upgrade on that punch first. Also, sorry if this is in the wrong place, mods could you please move it where it belongs. Thanks, Jeremy
  7. Hi everybody! New here from Texas, but currently living in St. Kitts for vet school. I make knives and have made some sheaths for them (not near as good as the knives themselves. Also into guns and archery, so anything I can make that will help me with those, I would love to learn. Mainly I just like making things with my own hands. It just means so much more to me than just buying something when you have made it yourself.
