  1. So the middle whould still be pretty thick right? Would you skive both outer and liner piece? Moving into nubuck would tax my already strained mind.
  2. This is probably a dumb question Lets say I am making a notebook cover. I want to line it so there is a flesh side on the outside and inside. I like the 6-7 oz leather for my covers. If I line it with a 2-3 oz leather does that in effect make it a whopping 8-10 oz leather cover which is way to thick? Should I adjust the outside cover by using a 4-5 oz leather?
  3. What I want is a good question. I am working toward a brief case build but being totally new to this I thought maybe a shoulder to start, but I don't really know how much that is quantity speaking. The buying leather part of leatherworking has me totally bamboozled. I just don't know what the different types of tanning is good for. is there a place to learn about that? I have never really been drawn to tooling. I really like the work on the Armatige site and that is the style I would like to aim for.
  4. If you want to offend a leather dealer call them and ask for leather with brands, scars etc. You would think I asked if their teenage daughter was single. No use naming names and I understand in a way. no one wants to be known as the folks who sell crappy leather. I guess, for that there is Ebay, and I found some nice folks selling "craft leather". Obviously off cuts from their own leather work. I bet they will have what I need for those notebook covers. Project number two. This time I will need quality leather and that seems to be easier to source but I have no idea who would be a good honest place to order from. I will never be some place where I can view the leather before I need it. Thus, honesty is key. I don't have the money to waste. Patterns. Is there a source for patterns out there that people find good. I found armatige leather through their you tube videos but not sure if their patterns are worth the money. Thanks for the help.
  5. I was loking and have not been able to find this information. I have never used Leather dye. I was wondering about their properties and layering the colors. If one was to use more than one dye are they opaque like oils and acrylics where you apply dark, then light as a general rule of thumb? Are they transparent like watercolors where you apply light then darker as a general rule of thumb?
  6. Ok I know I have a few ideas and they involve leather. While playing around making a simple notebook cover I got some ideas for other notebooks. The piece of leather I was using was not the best. Then I discovered Saddle Soap. When I put it on all the imperfections popped out and I liked it. That when I got the idea to make some journals and notebook covers out of leather with blemishes. I found some tools for decorating but have decided my first leather projects will have natural blemishes as the decoration and sprayed on graffiti stencils. Not original but I'll have fun doing it. Here is my problem; how do I buy those types of leather? PS is there an introduce yourself location here?
