I bought the Yamata FS288 from unbeatablesale.com for $295 shipped, with use of a promo code. It was a steal! Consew, Family Sew, Reliable, Yamata, Fiyue, Sailrite, and a couple more make the same model. However, I had to return it because for what I needed to do it was too powerful. Strange I know, but it was a workhorse! You can get the accessories from sailrite.com. I would recommend the Monster II Wheel for extra power and control in low speeds.

OK so I have the Universal Eyelit/Grommet setter and the Tandy Rivet setter. I've tried the Universal setter and it doesn't bend the 5/8 eyelits. I've tried the rivet setter and it doesn't work either. Please help! I feel so dumb because obviously there is a way, right? How do I do it? I am making handbags so I need them to look neat and not ruin the leather while doing it. Here's a pic of the one's I am trying to do: here's the tools I have I tried to fix the pics for you but there is some info missing. Please upload them again, and someone is sure to help you out. ~Johanna

Hi George! Yes, they are the triangle (TRI). Actually, I bought a different machine and don't need 210- 135x16 needles because they don't fit the NEW machine . I bought them for the FS288 I had, but I returned the FS288.

Needle Jamming Into Retaining Ring and Hook
Ashley replied to Ashley's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
You were right Ian! It was that simple. I put the needle in backwards. Works great now! All I have to say is wow, it has some definite power! Here is what I made. I made this as a learning bag. I actually found on *raigslist a guy that was selling Naugahide, hardware, equipment etc. I bought 3 big roles of black, white, and red Naugahide (200 yards each roll) (like faux leather ... what they use for jetski seats), 300 brass and nickel buckles, thousands of antique brass and nickel rivet sets, hole punch set with 6 different sizes, 2 Osborne hole punches, 3 pairs of steel scissors, 150 dog leash clasps in nickel and brass, red, white, black, and brown #69 thread- all for $20!!!!!!!!!! So, I used some of the Naugahide to experiment...when I get better I will switch to the leather that I bought from Tandy a couple weeks ago. OK here is my first handbag ever: I know there are a lot of crooked lines. I'll work on that -
I have a FS288 (similar to the Sailrite Ultrafeed LSZ-1). I've watched the Advanced Maintainace DVD over and over again, trying to fix what they ask me to. However, my needle continues to hit the retaining ring and the hook! Any advice?

My hubby came to the rescue! He took off the top of the machine and straightened the bobbin post on the right. It was crooked. I watched the Sailrite Ultrafeed Set-Up & Use (got them in yesterday) and I had everything right and I tried tweeking the tensioner and it wasn't helping. So, today after calling Yamata directly and leaving a message...my hubby tried to fix it. YIPPEE! I bought the swing gauge from Sailrite...the screws do not fit, should I by smaller screws? The FS288 has holes where they are supposed to go but they aren't grooved for screws.

Thanks. Do I use the same thread for the bobbin? The sailrite bobbin winder is only $15, but it needs to connect with the fly wheel to operate, which I am not that mechanical. However, it says that it connects with 3 screws and that's it. Maybe worth trying?
-
how do you do it with a drill? Is it worth buying the Sailrite bobbin winder? Or another bobbin winder on the side. Like this one? Bobbin Winder

I have #69 coming this week and #16 and #18 needles too. MY hubby actually took a screw driver, put it under the thread and let it lay on it, holding the thread up a bit as it wound around the bobbin, it worked then. I am wondering if the bobbin isn't low enough on the machine? We raised the tensioner as high as it would go and it still is winding mainly around the bottom.
-
I think it might be the thread. I have #69 thread coming, but I was trying to use regular all purpose thread. Could that be the problem? Do I use bobbin thread that is the same as the other thread? I know these might be dumb questions but I've only used a home sewing machine before nothing that used anything but all purpose or rayon type stuff.
-
This is really frustrating because I can't even sew anything without a wound bobbin. My husband looked at it and he's the mechanical one. He couldn't get it to work either. ARGH!
-
Not sure what you mean about the discs. I have it in the bobbin tensioner already. Is that what you mean? On the left of the machine? This is from the sailrite manual: ">
-
Tried it and it still doesn't work. I am wasting a lot of thread trying to figure this out. I posted another thread because this title isn't accurate.

I am starting a new thread because the one I was chatting in was about a singer. Ok, I bought a FS288 (like the Sailrite LSZ-1) and I am having an issue with the bobbin not winding evenly. John told me about the screw in front of the bobbin tensioner. I have raised and lowered it and have found no height that will make the bobbin wind evenly. Please help! Pic below shows you how I have it set up This pic shows you how uneven it winds the thread ">

What kind of universal presser feet will work on this machine? Can i use the same thread for the bobbin? Also, the bobbin winder post is crooked and as a result my bobbin is not winding evenly. Any suggestions?

I received my machine today. I have only sewn on a home machine and this is definitely new to me. The manual that comes with it is so vague. I am having a hard time threading it. Please help! Do I use #69 thread for handbags and wallets? Do I use 135x16 size 16, 18, 20, or 22?
-
Yippee! Got shipping confirmation that it will be delivered on Tuesday next week. Hoping it's sooner though! I am going to wait until I get the machine to buy any accessories. I'll keep you posted

Ok, so I bought the FS288 and it should be delivered on Thursday. Questions: 1. What kind of thread should I use that will be durable with handbags? 2. Are there any websites where I can buy the accessories for less than on sailrite? 3. Are the accessories for the LSZ-1 the same as the FS288? 4. What kind of needles are best for leather- 16s? 5. I have a table light, do you think I need the light that attaches to the machine? 6. Does the Binder Swing Away Bracket 3/4" work on the FS288? Binder Swing Away Bracket 7. Can I use leather with the Binder Bracket - leather being the binder? 8. What DVDs did you recommend John? I can't find them on sailrite.com. 9. These are the accessories I am thinking about getting- good, not necessary, or am I missing something? Swing Gauge - Sewing Fence, Leather presser foot, Baby Lock Light, Left Zipper Presser Foot, Monster II Balance Wheel, Binder 3/4" Swing Bracket 10. Will these feet work on the FS288? http://www.creativefeet.com/ Thank you in advance! Ashley
