  1. Wiz, I sure appreciate you sharing your experience, thank you. I just noticed something else I'd like to solicit your thoughts about. When the presser foot is rotated around the needle bar the point of the needle wobbles. I can only get the needle centered in the hole in the bobbin cover in one location of the presser foot rotation. There is no play I can feel in the needle bar, but it's gritty at one location when rotating the foot and at that location it moves the needle about half the needle diameter. Of course the bad spot is the position I want to sew 90 percent of the time 90 degrees to the machine. Probably moving the needle out of vertical enough to break the needles in thicker material.
  2. Thanks Again Wiz. I'm still puzzled by the needle breaking, I've tried different leathers and didn't see any sign of the rawhide. Maybe I have too much tension on the thread, I turned that adjustment until the knots on the bottom were no longer visible, but maybe I went too far.
  3. Thanks wiz, that fixed that, appreciate it. The only manual I have is a poor scan of a singer 29. Any ideas why a 120 gros Becker new leather needle will sew two 4 oz pieces perfectly, or one 7/8 oz piece but if I try two, (less than 1/4 inch thick and pretty soft) the needle will break every time on the first plunge in?
  4. Hi all, is the needle supposed to hit the side of the bobbin cover and bend slightly? With the bobbin cover open the needle would actually hit the bobbin shuttle if the slightly off center hole in the cover didn't direct it away. I am using 92 thread and 110 and 120 needles. It sews fine in thin leather, 2 soft 3 oz pieces but in hard leather or even two very soft 5 oz pieces the needles break. They break in the top piece before it gets to the bobbin cover. Any suggestions are sure appreciated. I did not buy this from nickosew. A factory that sewed school or sports patches on ugg style sheepskin boots bought it in 2011. It didn't work for them (he didn't elaborate) and they only used it once. I believe it, the needle box from nickosew only had one needle gone. I'm trying to get it figured out. Thanks Matt
  5. I think it's just the set screws are not holding to the shaft very well.
  6. Thanks wiz crafts, the bobbin knob engages and when I try to use the wheel, as soon as it encounters resistance it feels like it slips. The motor runs the machine and turns the wheel. When I pull the knob to use the bobbin winder it runs very smooth and easy.
  7. Hi I just got this machine today and I am trying to get it set up. My first question is why does the hand wheel move when powered by the motor, but I can't use the wheel to lift the needle. Nothing seems to happen when I try to use the wheel, it's not grabbing. I do have to pull the release knob to wind the bobbin, its not that simple.
  8. Thanks, I will see if I can purchase a sample card. Matt
  9. Hello Folks, I am very interested in comparing side by side visually 69, 92,138, 207, 277 and 346 thread, with the most interest in 92 138 and 207. I can't find a picture on the internet. If one of you who has these thread sizes wouldn't mind posting a picture with some snips of these threads next to a penny or something I sure would be grateful. I don't have any stores close where I can go look at them. Thanks, Matt
  10. Hello, I am a novice looking for my first machine. Interested in trying to make some shoes, don't want to hand sew the uppers. I am going to contact the seller about the machine in the photo. I will see how many stiches per inch it will sew, and understand the best answer is about 5, and to check the presser foot for play. I also read to make sure that the clutch allows the hand wheel use. Couple of questions I would be grateful for your thoughts Is there anything else I should check or look for on the machine?I am a competent woodworker, assuming I build a table for it, is it a good machine for shoes and maybe bags?Is 92 thread a possibility or should I stick to 69? I first thought that I'd get a harness sticher until I read here that you can't use light thread, but it would be nice to be able to use a fairly heavy thread like 92 on this. The asking price is $900, any thoughts on this are appreciated as well.Thank you for taking the time to read a rookies post. Matt
  11. Thank you, neither machine sounds like its what I am looking for after speaking with the seller
  12. Hello, wondering what model this machine on the local craigslist is, the price is down to 250 obo. I want to try my hand at shoes, and don't want to hand Stich the uppers. Based on what I read I'm looking for something with a roller foot and that can slow down. Another option for sale locally is a singer 241-13 walking foot with no reverse. Would that be a suitable machine for vamps? Thanks Matt
