Hi all I've read a few ideas on the forum about workbenches. I am thinking of having two separate ones, one for cutting leather, one for stamping, carving. I have a piece of marble which I believe is good for cutting leather or stamping (I can't remember which). I have a singer 201 sewing machine I was thinking of buying two old dining tables to start, unless others have a cheap suggestion for a sturdy bench. I don't have the funds to buy pine benches at the moment. Kind Regards Scott

skarmartin replied to Chavez's topic in How Do I Do That?
Hi all thanks for your input: thanks for the input I decided to split the difference and go with a 4.5 oz deerskin (it was cheaper as well). similar to this but in the above weight: https://www.theleatherguy.org/leather-new-zealand-deerskin-hide-11-3-square-foot-green-3-1-2-ounces-grainy-c Any other suggestions, on maybe what thread to use? I was thnking a artifical sinew (hoping its strong). Kind Regards and thanks for all of your help. Scott -
Looking To Make My First Purse/bag - What Leather To Use?
skarmartin replied to Chavez's topic in How Do I Do That?
Hi as a newbie to leather I have found a pattern and I am wanting to know, which leather to use, a calf hide of about 3-3.5 (a guy in australia) oz or a water buffalo of 5-6 oz (springfield leather company). I wasnt going to line it unless you experts say other wise. Also having no tools, I am wondering should i get my dads tools ( I know he did some leather work when he was younger so they would be about 30 years +) Or should I get the new ones from tandy leather , springfield leather company etc. Is the old addage they dont make them like the use to, apply to leatherworking tools. I am coming from a watchmaking background so I know good quality tools are worth it. the pattern is here : Unless there is free patterns out there for a basic handbag. Kind Regards Scott -
Hi All Background. No previous experience in leatherworking other then a fringe bag kit from tandy leather( Picture attached). 5 years ago i went in for a routine shunt operation and the neurosurgeon knicked the occiptial nerve on my brain so i cant work any more. I am kinda hooked after hand sewing the wee fringe bag for my niece and then putting a design on it with my pyrography tool (another new skill I am working on to go hand in hand with the leatherwork rather then just leather carving). I found the hand sewing very therapeutic and I can stop and start at will (within in reason). Problem. No tools no experience and I was wanting to do something for my twin sisters birthday by the end of the month. I was thinking a basic hand bag or purse. I would like your suggestions on what patterns to buy for a beginner, and as they are in their 30s something plain and not childish. Handsewing is preferred as I don't have a machine at moment, I would rather save for a few hand tools first Kind Regards ShenLun
