  1. @Windrider30, @Jefzilla, @Halitech Sorry I couldn't thank you earlier, login problems Thank you guys so much, brilliant ideas. These conches are actually very, hard steel more so than I thought so I'm sure any of those solutions suggested will be fine.
  2. Hi all I bought a few sale items from an online store including s couple of 3cm conchos. They are 'hammer on' kinds. Now I'm wondering if I'm going to ruin it when I eventually attempt to apply it considering it didn't come with an anvil and it's a concave shape 😕 Ideas please? Thank you in advance x
  3. Fantastic advice from all, thanks so much for sharing your own methods and ideas Hondoman Manila paper is s great idea, will get hold of some 👍🏼thanks Boriqua, yep mushy is definitely the perfect adjective here! I think you've got exactly what happened. Thanks for the advice 👍🏼
  4. Thank you all for the help 👍🏼😊
  5. The back is in the photo attached. That's an idea that didn't dawn on me... Could get my OH to sort out something similar for me. Thanks!
  6. Thank you Hondoman and Thor. I don't seem to find much from Italian sellers but I'll try that first. Thanks for the links x
  7. Oh wow, that's going to be an invaluable experience for you! Well done for winning. There is nothing like that in the area of Italy where I live Hope you enjoy it! Btw if you are German your English is amazing Have a great time at the course!
  8. I'm in love with this beautiful unicorn Midas stamp, I've been told it's out of production. Where can I get a handle for this online? It has a 1cm plain, circular opening on top. Thanks in advance
  9. You're welcome, I'm a newbie so no experience in leather but I've seen a few colours in my fifty years 😁. I think I've got the gist of that colour she described, sounds like something I'd choose for lipstick 😊 oh btw I am female lol Can't wait to see it.
  10. Hi, It's really difficult to suggest without seeing the object but even if you post a photo here, each screen will see it differently. I would probably take a small quantity of the russet dye and tone it down a little with a spot of black. That way I wouldn't wander too far away from the original colour risking a bad clash of colour. If you need two colors, as you mention writing and outlining, make two different tones of the same russet. Don't know if it will work but I'd tend to go that way. Good luck, I'd love to see the sheath when it's finished 👍🏼
  11. Thank you both guys, my edges are not straight but I've got the idea of it 👍🏼 I used glycerin soap and just water, I haven't slicker do I used a piece of denim cloth as suggested by the expert on another thread. My edges are not straight, it's all far from perfect but it's only my second project almost done. Will tan kote. Thanks again 😘
  12. That's the problem I encountered with my first project Halitech, the two layers of leather tended to separate in a few places. Logical, everyone has their own method. Many thanks x
  13. I read the great thread on finishing edges but I still need guidance. I need to join these two pieces together so I glue right up to the edge before sewing, right? Then I treat the edge as though it were one thick piece of leather. Ok I have no gum trag, and actually not much of anything, product wise. What I do have is glycerin soap, a liquid product that is meant to soften saddles ( smells like olive oil but contains 15% beeswax and 20% lanolin), gel antique, super sheen and tan kote...um that's it. What to do? Suppose the logical answer would be, buy what you need before starting 😊😁
  14. Many thanks for the encouragement I have been bitten by the bug and I'm loving it. Will definitely look for Mr Stohlman books
  15. It's a bit of a vicious circle... I don't want to spend the money on an alphabet set just yet, but I'd like to be able to personalize wallets/ dog collars etc. so I tried by cutting (swivel knife) and using a beveller for the first time. Only a scrap piece but I can see it's never going to look professional enough if I have to rely on my 'skills' at this moment at least ( hoping to improve!) I'm in an area of southern Italy where there are no workshops or the like, so I have to rely on tutorials and books ( I prefer a good old book) actually I don't think there are many leather crafters on the entire island And they definitely would not be tooling leather. Is there any one book that might help me understand more about bevelling? Thanks for any title suggestions.
  16. I've just made one for my husband, very first project, and when I designed my pattern, I purposely cut the inside piece of leather 1cm smaller than the outside. Then I left 2 cm unstitched in the center fold. The reason being, it's the only way of getting a good fold as the shorter inside 'pulls' the wallet naturally to it's finished shape. If you were to use two pieces of the exact same length, after stitching the two layers would attempt to 'pucker' as the bifold is folded. The thickness of the leather wouldn't allow folding without that small unsewn space that 'gives'. Being leather, instead of puckering, it would pull the stitching and just not hold a good shape. It wouldn't 'lay' right. I don't know if I've explained properly though 😊
  17. Interesting thread, I'm new to leather and loving the all the info given on this forum. I followed the advice above (NCLeatherworx, thanks!). On the right, one good coat of supersheen and black gel antique. (Yuk) On the left, two good coats of supersheen, 8 hours apart, then black antique. Both finished with one coat of Tan-Kote Not too bad though I don't really like the grey effect of the black gel antique.
  18. Hi, brilliant thread so many great ideas, thank you! I'm a newbie both to leather work and to the forum so I hope this isn't too silly. I've been using the tiny brushes from small, empty pots of nail varnish, to paint supersheen onto basket weave ( on the parts I want to resist before staining). They are the perfect width to fit one 'strip' of weave, so it helps me to not make a complete mess of my projects. I soak them in remover overnight first, then give them a good wash with mild soap before using.
  19. Beautiful, may I ask if the black border is edge coat or black dye?
