  1. Ruger made two different frame sizes of Vaquero pistols. Here's an article with a handy graph that shows the differences in cylinder length and diameter. Unfortunately I haven't found any similar graphs for frame length and widths. http://www.gunblast.com/Ruger-NewVaquero.htm
  2. The difference in a full length sized cartridge and a neck size only is going to be a tiny fraction of an inch (like measure in the thousandths). Like you said it won't make a difference for a cartridge loop, the leather is going to stretch a lot more than that. McCain: You could ask folks who reload to load you some dummy cartridges. They could be sized back to SAAMI spec but not contain any powder and either a dummy primer or no primer at all. Lots of reloaders have brass that they can't use anymore because it's no longer safe. Most of us save it up until we have enough to make a trip to the recyclers, I'm sure just about any of them would be willing to give you a few dummy rounds.
  3. Thanks! It's a cross draw sheath with another loop on the back. What is an avenger holster?
  4. All of my sheaths have a welt for the reasons listed above by Dwight. Here is a sort of a pancake cross draw sheath I did a while ago (just to see if I could). I made it a touch to small and had to open up the throat just a bit. I cut another piece of welt material and carefully tapered it with an X-acto knife. Not the proper way but my tools are pretty limited and I used what I had. Notice the top of the sheath appears pinched, so far this has held fine and the stitching is all there. First photo was just after I'd finished it up a year or so ago, second photo I just took a few minutes ago to show the welt/wedge. Here is a close up of the tapered wedge I put in open it up.
  5. Pacific North West. Its the local way of saying I'm from Washington State haha
  6. Hello! I'm a long way from every making a saddle but I do miss working on the ranch.
  7. As I said in my introduction I'm a beginner, I can turn out serviceable but something nice to look at has thus far been lost on me. I made this a few years ago when I really started welding. Works great for carrying tools I use constantly both in a weld shop as well as when I was working on a ranch. I've worn it every day for the last several years with no problems although I did regrease it a few times. I doubled up layers on the belt attachment and that is starting to delaminate but other than that it's still good to go. One of my favorite sheaths, and early one but I got lucky and it fits just right. Here's a dual retention sheath I made. It was a sort of design as you go thing. Couple .308 magazine pouches I tried. One on the left was my first, I was unhappy with it so I made the one on the right. Cross draw sheath for another custom knife. I made it too tight so it's near impossible to draw the knife when on a belt. It'll loosen up with use but I just don't use it much at all. This last one was to see if I could make a pouch style sheath for a knife with a guard. Worked fine but since it was a prototype I figured there would be several do overs and as such didn't design it with any sort of belt attachment. But at least it keeps the knife safe. Some quick roses I tried. Was a fast project but still taught me a thing or two. Well thanks for looking. Constructive criticism is welcome as I'm here to learn!
  8. Thanks everyone! Biker, I loved it. Only reason I left was the paychecks started coming in whenever the boss felt like it. I'd get two in one week and then have to wait nearly a month for the next one. I got fed up with that pretty quick. Stelmackr thanks for the info but I am not close to any of those places. Grew up on a small ranch 5 miles south of Banks Lake. I'll look at the website though and hopefully I can make a meeting one of these days!
  9. Howdy, new guy here from the dry side of Washington. I'm a welder by trade but that came about after spending 5 years framing for a small construction outfit. Suppose you could say I like making things with my hands. I'm not very good at leather even though I've been doing it for a few years now though I can make a serviceable sheath (but it won't be fancy). I'd like to take on some more advanced projects but I need help learning a few things and this looked like the right place to learn some things.
