This photo is part one of a large picture with the carving of a bear and a native indian in beardress. Robb put the 2 carvings into one frame. When I remember correctly Robb made 3 different series. One with Wolf and native Indian in wolfdress (the patterns for them are shown in Robb's design book) One with a buffalo and native Indian with buffalo hat One with bear and native Indian in beardress© © leatherworker.net

Robb made this picture fpr a Japanese customer. He had only photos 4"x6" and it was very hard for him to see the detail. Nevertheless he made a wonderful carving. He told me that he used translucent Createx airbrush colors for the eyes. This picture was also shown at the 1996 11th Japanese International Leather Art Forum.© © leatherworker.net

some weeks ago I made an elephant after the instructions from Clay B's tutorial. Please let me know what you think. Any critique is welcome.

your bear looks fantastic. I'm looking every day on your blog to see how you are doing with the Grizzly. Can't wait to see them finished. Wish you an Jan much pleasure and success with this special kind of leather art.

Here's a few pictures of how I did the long hair on the elk cow. It was all done with Bob Beard's lined point tool. Hello ClayB, thank you very much for the great tutorial. I'm so sorry that I answer so late, but I haven't seen it. I was very busy carving horses after yaklady's Tutorials and have seen your tut. I will try doing hairs with Bob Beards pointed lined Beveler. I will be very busy in the next weeks. Have to learn how to carve horse eyes, nostrils, foreheads, muscles and now hair textures. But it is a lot of fun and I hope I will improve. Greetings Gisela

Hi Kathy, I'm ready with the Palomino Horsehead. I used a little bit thinner leather. It is 3,23 mm thick, that's about 8 ounces. I had the nostril done before I read your advice and it seems as if the leather has a little bit broken on the edge. I used the F 902 for the forehead and mane, but I'm not completely satisfied. The Modeling tool is the one from Peter Main. I have also noted that I have hold the Figure Beveler at the first horsehead carving wrong. As I made the muscles on the horse I used the toe and leaned it against the leather. I have later tried to smooth it out, but I have hit the tool too hard. For the Palomino horse I used the Figure Beveler sparingly and leaned it against the heel. In some place I used a smooth Pear Shader, but the most work is done with Peter Main's Modeling Tool. I find this carving looks much better as the first, but I have yet to try a lot to become better. I will try some eyes, nostrils and of course foreheads. Thank you again for the forehead tutorial and please take again a hard look on the Palomini Horse. I hope you are not bored with looking on all my tries. The scan with the name GB_Palomino-Horsehead_1_web is again a scan with 300dpi. The others are made with a Camera. Greetings Gisela

Hi Kathy, thank you very much for the tutorial for the horse forehead. I hope the next horse carving will become now better. Sometimes I’m a very stupid woman. I own Peter Main’s Modelling Tool and haven’t used them. I have put all my tools at the closet as I stopped leather work and have taken only a few out from the closet as I stared again with carving. Now I have looked through my collection and brought them all back into my room where I do leather carving. I have also a modified F910 and also 2 stamps from Bob Beard which look like modified F910. One is small and the other is a little bit larger. Am I not crazy? Having some very good tools and didn’t use them? I can’t understand myself!! This weekend I will look through my stamp collection and will choose the ones which I will use more often. I will put them directly against my working table. I have also looked through my Doodle Page collection and found a Palomino Horse Carving from you. Yesterday I have started with carving them and I hope it will become ready this weekend so that I can show it here at the forum. Thank you again very much for your help. Gisela

It does look like you got close to breaking through with the pro petal. How heavy is your leather? The heavier it is, the deeper you can go with that. I'm certainly not disappointed! In fact, I'm impressed at how well you're doing. You'll have it down in no time. Kathy Hi Kathy, thank you very much for your critique. I have taken the heaviest leather which I have and it is 3,8 mm thick that is between 9 and 10 oz. Maybe I have not cut deep enough into the leather? I have always problems to cut deep into the leather. Maybe this is the reason? However I will try the use of the Pro Petal tool and will make some horse noses on scrap leather. Gisela
