I received an order of Hermann Oak recently, but it seems pretty stiff for 5-6 oz. leather and the flesh side is like fine-grit sandpaper (instead of shaggy rough). I'm certain I could sand furniture with it. I have limited experience with leather, though, and this is the first time I've ordered veg tan, so I am wondering whether it is normal or if I got a less than stellar piece. I've put some mink oil paste on a couple of small swatches, but the jury is still out as to whether it will soften it much. Advice?

Hello, I'd like to buy some leather for a small project (a few simple notebook covers). Can anyone recommend a place where I can purchase leather of reasonably good quality by the foot? I've spent a ridiculous amount of time combing the internet for trustworthy suppliers, but with my limited knowledge of leather it's difficult to sift the wheat from the chaff. Where should I look? Where (if this kind of question is not taboo or likely to start forum wars) avoid? Many, many thanks for any help you can offer.
