Your best bet would be to contact a leather tanning company or 2, and get some suggestions from someone who suppl[es leather for a similar function....? They would be more knowledgeable about which leather would be suitable.

I have this antique machine that looks very much like the heavy machines made today and is a dream of a machine for my purposes, only the shuttle and various other parts of the shuttle -race are just plain worn out.
