  1. Here are a couple of scarf slides that I made the other day. they are made with some cheap goat lace that I bought at hobby lobby to practice with. The only exception is the the whiskey color interweave is kangaroo. let me know what you think and how I can improve. sorry in advance for the bad pictures. Rick
  2. thanks for the input guys it has been a big help. millwright I might just take you up on your offer pm me and let me know how much you want for the hide.
  3. I'm pretty new to braiding, been just playing around with it for about a year or so. I haven't done anything with rawhide yet but I am wanting to try and have been looking through alot of the posts here and was just wandering about something. i have seen discussions about horse and of course cow rawhide, but what about goat. is it any good for braiding? i have heard of people using strings cut from goat leather and heard that it is very strong. sorry if this is a stupid question but I was just curious. it is also cheaper that the other rawhides and thought that if it could be used for braiding i might buy some without the worry of screwing it up. Rick
  4. they are spur straps, and they look great.
  5. if you have a hobby lobby nearby they should carry a small section of leather craft supplies. at least the one where i live does.

  9. thanks for the feed back and sorry for the slow reply i have been gone to a horse sale since Thursday. I plan to make some changes to the pattern such as a larger flower in the center and i had considered a few more leaves. it took me a week to draw this one, i guess i'm not much of an artist. i appreciate the input.
  10. well here is the first project that i have posted. it is a bronc nose band for a rope halter. this is also the first pattern that i have drawn myself that i was reasonably pleased with. let me know what you think.
  11. i called them and within a week had the magazine
  12. Thanks for the help. I feel a bit like an idiot i had it set in my mind that the leather had to be fixed to something such as cardboard or x-ray film. I guess that's the learning process though. rick
  13. i currently use rubber cement to attach my leather to x-ray film to keep it from stretching while tooling. I would like to try taping it but i don't know what kind of tape to use. the only double sided tape that i have been able to locate is scotch tape and didn't think that this would be strong enough. any suggestions Rick
  14. you got that right.
  15. I HAVE SEEN THESE IN THE HARBOR FREIGHT STORE WHERE I LIVE AND I DON'T BELIEVE THEY ARE CRAFTOOL. IN FACT THEY LOOK LIKE VERY LOW QUALITY TOOLS.

    HI

THOUGHT THAT I SHOULD INTRODUCE MYSELF SINCE I HAVE BEEN A MEMBER NOW FOR ABOUT A MONTH. MY NAME IS RICK AND I LIVE IN JONESBORO, AR. I HAVE BEEN DOING LEATHER WORK FOR A VERY SHORT TIME, APPROX. 8 MONTHS, AND AM BASICALLY LEARNING ON MY OWN USING BOOKS AND A VIDEO. MOST OF MY INTERESTS IN LEATHER ARE IN MAKING MY OWN TACK. HOPEFULLY I WILL START TRYING TO BUILD A SADDLE SOON WITH THE HELP OF SOME VIDEOS WHICH SEVERAL OF YOU HAVE RECOMMENDED. FINDING THIS FORUM HAS BEEN A GREAT HELP IN THE LEARNING WHAT VERY LITTLE I KNOW, SIMPLY BECAUSE THERE IS SO MUCH TALENT HERE AND YOU FOLKS ARE WILLING TO SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE. THANKS TO EVERYONE
  17. Thanks for the help.
  18. I have wanted to learn how to build my own saddle for most of my life. The problem is that there are not many saddle makers where I live. I was considering purchasing videos/books on the topic. I know that hands on training is much better but working full time and having a family puts a damper on things. I am wanting the video by Jeremiah Watt and was also looking at the videos by Bruce Cheany and Bill Gomer. Any input would be a great help.
  19. Thanks for the input, it's a lot of help.
  20. I recently acquired a singer 236w sewing machine from my uncle. does anyone have any experience with this particular machine. the machine has been in storage for several years and is in need of a good cleaning, and who knows what else. I called singer and they told me that it was designed for stitching welts on shoe/boots but would be suitable for any leather sewing. I am in need of schematics for the machine or a detailed parts list. any help or input would be greatly appreciated.
