I thought I'd post this topic so that I feel that I am contributing to the forum with more than just pics of my work. How I make a Bridle - most of this is a plain bridle but to show the stitching I have added some fancy pattern work For those of you who may be interested - here's how to make a bridle Making a Bridle Firstly, here are all the tools needed. These are JUST for bridle making, there are other tools for making harness and other saddlery. The price of these tools totals around £1000! From the top, in their 'rows' left to right, they are: Splitting machine, lighter, gas blow-torch, lead block, stain, staining stick and polishing cloth Sci…

As the title says, I'm looking for a way to display several headstalls, halters, hackamores, etc. Ideally something that can hang on the wall or somehow arranged in front of a saddle stand display with a plackard nearby explaining the what and why. I've found several places that sell plastic or fiberglass busts of horses heads, but often at $300+ and that will add up quick doing multiples (anywhere from 5 to 20 depending on how far I go). I'm wondering if anyone else has done something similar? I would actually prefer less detail so it doesn't detract from the displayed item, similar to mannequins in a department store, but It still needs to be life-size and have som…

I’m going to try to make a Main & Winchester inspired set of pommel bags. I’ve never made anything like this before, and was hoping to find some guidance. I found an old post on here that included links to a pattern and instructions specifically for this style of pommel bag.

My mother-in-law wants a bitless side pull for Christmas, so I’m looking for some construction and material pointers. I have a side pull in the barn that has a snaffle bit in it so I should be able to copy most of it from that, however I don’t know how to tie the knots for the rope nose band. She found one from Weaver that has a double rope nose band that she likes. I don’t know if you make that from a single rope or two pieces? My current plan is to build it out of heavy harness leather in 5/8” straps with a 1/2” throat latch and use 2” o-rings for hardware. If any one has some advice or tips I would appreciate the help.

Hi all, I have a few beginner questions regarding leather type and dying.... I want to make another headstall for my horse, but I am stuck on a few things. 1. What is the best type of leather for a headstall? I was thinking veg tan as that's what I used last time and I want to add basic stamps and tooling, but I don't like how stiff it is. Is there a way to soften veg tan leather to make it softer and more pliable? 2. I want to try and match the color to my saddle (pictured). I know this is kind of a loaded question, but what would be the best way to achieve a similar color? I have used tandy dyes (on veg tan leather) in the past but no matter how …

I usually make bridles with a simple cavesson noseband - a continuous strap of leather and the buckle off center under the chin. This bridle has a Swedish or crank style noseband that evokes strong opinions. The crank is two-piece construction with a padded strap that can generate some leverage when tightening the noseband. Proponents say that the crank style provides flexibility and even pressure under the jaw. Critics note that the crank lends itself to overtightening, causing discomfort. The name "crank" is a rather unfortunate choice. I posted the bridle on social media and sure enough some of the comments were "cranky." Maybe there's no such thing as bad p…

A friend of mine had an old saddle and halter/bridle she wanted cleaned. The saddle hadn't been cleaned and had quite a bit of mud, grime, and dust. I cleaned it up and replaced a couple pieces. The halter/bridle didn't have mud on it but it was grimy, swollen, and is starting to disintegrate. It felt like it had been drowned in wax and weighs a lot. I has a curb chain but it had a rusty quick link holding it on. She wanted it cleaned but I advised her that it was on it's way out and it should be completely replaced. The new halter/bridle is made with 10oz vegtan. The crown, brow band, nose band, and cheek pieces are double layered.

I have made various things from leather and I feel like tackling a larger project. Whether that's me making tack to sell or making tack for me, I'm interested in how the complexity of certain things work. I'm vaguely aware of how to create a treed saddle, but what I'm really interested in is treeless (seems like a "horse girl" thing so maybe lucrative lol) and so now I'm trying to figure out how to make treeless saddles that aren't shit, with proper wither clearance. Also, instead of asking The Google I was wondering what your favorite measurements for things like headstalls and breastcollars are. Thanks!
