@Chux I'm in the same boat as yourself was wondering if you had any luck on the Boston style, been looking for the matte and patent leather supplier but with no luck was wondering if you found a good source for these ????

I don't have a source for patent leather, unfortunately, sorry about

  2. Hey guys, I had posted in the how do I do that section asking about doing a helmet shield in the "Boston" style. I've never had the opportunity to make a shield before and didn't know what that meant. I was able to get some help and make it and realized I didn't post it here so that being said may I present to you my first helmet shield!! I know it's not perfect, lol, no need to point out the obvious, but the client was happy with it and I learned a lot! Thanks for looking!

I looked around a bit and "Boston" seems to be the shape of the shield. I saw "Metro", "LA", "New York".

I thought it was just the outline shape of the shield as well but the image he sent as an example the top of the shield is "puckered" not really sure how else to articulate it...I'll try and upload the pictures he sent me....

There is a shop in Kansas City MO - Fitzwater Leather.  He is an active duty firefighter and does leatherwork.  He focuses on shields and has made tons of them around the country.  Reach out to him.  He would be happy to help, if he has what you need.

    Thank you very much!!

Another tip on searches. Most search engines have tabs under the search field. The first one is usually "All" this is the default tab, the second is usually "Images". Click on that an it'll show you the image search.

That's the way I usually do it, had no idea about prefixing a search with image. I learn something every day! Lol

  5. Does anyone have any leads they could point me towards on making a Boston style firefighter helmet shield? I was contacted on Facebook about making one. Not going to lie, I have a list longer than my leg of things I want to make and shields are on there but haven't as yet had a chance to do so. Any help to figure out if it's something I can manage would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!!

I saw the 45 rpm adapter at 1st, as well.  The 2nd one looks like a Japanese kamon or crest.

Someone pointed it out to me so I had to give it a go at making it

I can see the record centre now youse mention it but my first thought was of the Isle of Mann three legs symbol, the triskelion

nice tooling work indeed, i like a thumb hole. Put some locktite on those screws they come loose about two miles in.

Thank you! Definitely something I wouldn't have thought to do, thank you.

    Gorgeous work!

    Thank you!

  9. Here is a keychain design I was playing around with and after I finished it, all I could see was a certain animated starfish running. I posted it anyway and pointed out what it ended up looking like to me and someone commented that they saw something else...that something else is the second keychain. Just goes to show sometimes inspiration comes from out of nowhere to bite you in the butt lol 😆

Ok pictures decided to reverse on me. Brown keychain was what I started with, and the black was the "inspiration" keychain.

That is really nice! If I may ask, where did you get the pattern for that. I'd love to make one for one of my rifles.

Thank you! One of AL Stohlman's books. Might have been how to carve or his holster book. Sorry don't really remember off the top of my head

Thats a nice bit of tooling

But, what ruins the look for me is that short strap coming over the top and almost blocking out one leaf, leaving a hint of it

Thank you. I just followed the pattern I'll probably make my own changes along the way at some point lol

    Looking really good.

I like that that the rivets have some texture. That is a nice touch.
Also the creasing on the top part of the strap (the part with the rivets) looks really fine and consistent.

Thank you. I figured the "fancy" Chicago screws added a bit of flair rather than just plain ones. Thank you.
