red or blue training weapons

Recommended Posts

Because "Red gun" has 3 letter words I could not successfully search this topic. Forgive me if it is a duplicate.

For you guys and gals that do a lot of different holsters, has anyone thought of using the red or blue training weapons sold through police equipment companies as molds for their holsters. The are exact replicas of the guns they are meant to represent, there are many models currently in production, and they cost between 40 and 60 bucks. For a guy or gal who is not doing full production work but has the occasion to make holsters for the same models of guns on a regular basis, I think it would work great. You can also get red or blue dummy magazines for making mag holsters/carriers/pouches and the like.

Just an idea I had. Probably not the first but I thought I would offer it up just in case.

In my experience the Asp are not exact enough. Ring are pretty good as are the aluminum from Duncan. Search for dummy guns or counterfeit guns or stage props. There's nothing like the customer's gun, but that's getting harder to accomplish money wise.

Just got my order of 4 or 5 (can't remember, and too lazy to look in the box right now them 88 cent tv dinners really slow you down) rings handguns and matching mags from mirage technologies out of florida, 34 ea. and 14 ea. respectively. 11 and change shipping to utah. Most of the blue ones also come in black. I have not read good things about red ones and have also read the quality of the aluminum ones has gone way down.

Since I've heard these statements as well, I emailed ASP a week and a half ago and this is the response I received.

"The Red Guns we mold are very close to the actual gun but they can vary slightly probably up to .010". The other thing to be concerned about is on the training guns we make we reinforce some areas, especially the trigger guard. That's something you would have to check out too"

When I enquired about the "reinforcement", I received this:

"By reinforcing I mean adding extra material to areas like the trigger guard and behind the trigger. We will add material to the inside of the trigger guard to make it thicker. That normally doesn't interfere with putting the gun in the holster. We also have a solid web of material behind the trigger that will reinforce that."
