I was thinking about this and having been on the receiving I would like to propose something. I have only seen a "Stolen Saddle" section on a couple of saddlemaker websites.

I would propose the following:

(1) We add a section of Stolen Saddles to the saddlemaking section and

(2) Each saddlemaker that has a web site add a "Stolen Saddle" section

If the saddlemaker with web sites that are members here as well as the forum added a section here then we could raise some awareness that could possibly help get the saddles back since so many of them leave the area that they were stolen from. It might not make any difference but it could be a start with so many involved.

Please consider it.

Regards,

Ben

Just a pet peeve type comment here. Saddle Thieves Should Be "Hanged"...... not "Hung". Yeah, I know some English grammar teacher is having a conniption fit right now, muttering stuff about past tense and all, but ol' Webster lists it as an either or usage. So, we're both right according to him. Frankly, I think he's dead wrong on that. When referring to excution by hanging, it's hanged, not hung if you want to be historical about it.

Well, "hanged" or "hung" would be a great thing to do to such people...

But this is what I would suggest, there are already people out there that promote stolen horses. Why not put the saddles in the same place? A lot of horses have been returned to the rightful owner, sometimes years after they were stolen, so it might be worth a try. There is a "Stolen Horses" section on a site I check all the time: New Mexico Horse Talk and I know that there is also an organization on the web, but I don't know it off the top of my head. You'd have to google it.

Lots of people read about the stolen horses... I've also seen ads in all the free horse classifieds, such as Dream Horse. It would not cost a thing to put in such ads, and might really help. There is also a Tack Trader site, and that one is also free. I can't recall if they have a place for stolen goods....

If a thief realized that everywhere he went to sell such a thing people would be alerted it was stolen, they would probably be less willing to steal. This guy has to be a moron anyway. Both those saddles are readily identifiable.

Yeah, hopefully they'll nab 'em trying to get back across the border. And I don't mean the border with Canada.... although, times are tough up there too, these days, so who knows. Book'em, eh?

I think that adding a section about stolen saddles or leather tools would help everybody in the long run, however I believe that it should be left up to the leaders who put so much time and effort into to this sight. thanks Johanna and all the others. I live in Utah and have connections with the sherrifs dept so I personally will keep an eye out for the saddles posted in the pictures above. most of the people who are stealing these days are those who are seeking a quick buck to purchase drugs. well keep us posted if they are found

If we put a 'stolen saddle section' in the forum, it would be easier if the saddlers would link back to it from all their sites. That way a victim of a theft will only need to submit their info once, not try to daisy chain to all the saddlemakers individually and then hope the saddlemaker updates his site. I could ask the Monkey to make a banner people could click. I have no objection to it if it would help reunite saddles with their rightful owners. It would be up to you saddlemakers to use your sharp eyes to make it work though.

Johanna

They will turn up somewhere, I doubt there is another is saddle in the world with palm trees carved on the seat. They will show up on e-bay or at a pawn shop I'll bet. Chris I really liked the bit you made for Elko nice job.

Thanks everyone, just thought it would be good to spread the word somehow... As an update, the serial number on the Harwood saddle is 77427 not as shown on the flyer. Thanks Matt, how have you been? Did you find out who had shot those cattle? See you someday- Chris

After we hang 'em, can we make something with their hides?

Insert their bits into the jaws of a stitching horse and ever so slowly apply pressure to the pedal. Then make scrotum money pouches.
