howardb Report post Posted November 18, 2007 Hello, I'm a newbie. I got bit by the bug in Texas last month at the IFOLG show. I took "kids" class, enjoyed it, and got that basic tool set. Free class, free tools. Can it get any better than that? I took a leather painting class in the afternoon and found that way cool. I've dabbled in just about every other art medium throughout my 40-odd years and I think I finally found something that appeals to all the things I liked about other art media. My father in law (passed away) always wanted me to take up carving, and my mother in law is ecstatic that someone in the family is going to do leather work again. I've joined two of the guilds in the area so hopefully I'll have lots of help. I'm diving in head first... I'm making a holster for one of my pistols. I'm making my own pattern and now I'm trying to find a good design that will fit. I've got Al Stohlman's book to show me the steps, and an expert to help show me what not to do! (Somebody pass Brent the cookies, please!) Johanna Huh? Cookies!! I never met a cookie I didn't like... I'm in Fort Wayne. I've joined the Calumet Guild and will probably be joining the re-forming Hoosier Leather Guild. They just had their first organizational meeting in Logansport last month. bruce johnson Report post Posted November 23, 2007 Brent, A belated welcome. You perked my ears up when you mentioned Logansport. I lived there from 1968 through 1984. I am a fine graduate of Logansport HS (Yes folks we were the "Logan Berries" - no joke), worked in the slaughterhouse, and went to college at Purdue. I ended up in California, but my folks still live there. I was back once in 2003 for the HS reunion. When I was growing up there, Harold Streu had the Bar S Saddle shop. I spent a bit of time there. They auctioned off his estate a while back, and I sent my dad to buy me a "nostalgia" tool. I am kind of curious who is doing leatherwork in Logansport now, get them to join us here. Best of luck to the reformed guild.
