Consew Model 18 Stitch Length

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I recently acquired a mint condition Consew Model 18. (Singer 16-188 clone)

The machine was all out of sorts when I got it, but looked brand new. I’m thinking it was messed with and then never fixed.

I fixed the feed dog timing, adjusted the timing of the top foot, and now have a machine that feeds material very evenly.

The problem is stitch length- it started at like a 7-8 SPI.

I loosened and adjusted the collar that connects the fork for the feed dog, and the fork for the upper camshaft. I was able to increase the length of the stitch to 5.5 SPI.

The manual clearly states it would be able to do as long as 4SPI. I could really use the extra 40% length for some top stitching.

Any advice on how I can retune this machine to run its full stitch length?

Edit: this is a 16 series clone, so very very similar in design to 31-15 Singers

Is the feed dog coming above the needle plate enough? If so you could elongate the slot for the stitch length screw so it goes down alittle more, you also want to check that the feed dog isn't hitting in the front or back of the needle plate. There's an adjustment on the lower feed shaft that sets it.
