Shadders Report post Posted March 19 Hello Everyone, I’d like to ask your collective advice on a pattern I’ve purchased. If you don’t mind, a little history first. I have a lady friend that’s going through a pretty rough time at the moment. She means a lot to me as she helped when I had a similar rough time myself, many years ago. I want to make her something to cheer her up, so after looking around I discovered bag charms, something I never knew existed until a week ago. I’ve purchased a pattern that I think she’ll like and printed it out, but on closer inspection… The pattern has a straight line of five or so 1mm (1/25”) square holes in it and I have no idea what kind of tool I could use to manually get a good result. I’ve seen a 1mm square hole punch being advertised on Amazon, but a comment left by a purchaser stated it was closer to 2mm. I’ve also considered a scalpel blade, but even the thinnest look to be too big. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting a clean looking 1mm square hole in leather 1mm to 1.4mm thick please? If you know of any tool or technique you could share, I’d be really grateful. By the way, I also contacted the pattern maker, but they suggested buying a kit from them with precut leather. I totally understand why. I would, no doubt get a better looking result and it’s easier. I can see the sense in the suggestion. But I want to use this to learn as well. And I won’t learn if 2/3 if the job is done for me. Besides, I want to choose the colours and the leather to use. Thank you for taking the time to read. And thank you again if you take the time to reply. Shadders.
Wepster Report post Posted March 19 This is etsy here, so maybe not useful to you in the UK, but google square hole punch... too simple, right https://www.etsy.com/listing/1314234785/square-hole-steel-punch-1-2-3-4-5mm?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_d-craft_supplies_and_tools-decorations_and_embellishments-studs&utm_custom1=_k_CjwKCAjw7-SvBhB6EiwAwYdCAT74rsfOOVtv5e_kEflPSuEm8MaVb0-vsAYph08pwuwGkv15u7npIRoCqKcQAvD_BwE_k_&utm_content=go_1843970773_72423993831_346362959505_pla-295472670707_c__1314234785_12768591&utm_custom2=1843970773&gad_source=
Wepster Report post Posted March 20 Also, there are 1mm carving (wood) chisels, and you might find a 90 deg V carving tool that is 1mm. There are cheap little carving sets that with a file and perhaps pliers you could make the small chisel into 1mm, and the V into a 90, and 1mm This showing shipping to US, don't know your shippling cost https://www.amazon.co.uk/Modelcraft-PCT1006-Carving-Sharpening-Stone/dp/B01N5XWO2J/ref=sr_1_17?crid=1CGMLX9O8DCWI&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Gy29Pv1ByDLpq-CzknxKaf-NSHEmw8MmqjUNii8zdTn56doehZrr14FdCJtXwKre750J0JMumETdbXShGZh53FZbhdx_YfVN529ETdllKW7WPKhHNma70fwVWI_rv0CzYfJJC-waAMxowFRfV_nXxCK7y6sGy1oDVx_eJf1x4XWeZttZQBzS3aL9IB9yWRayMzu8ACO0mUaeho7WVGIDttM44aj_nG-lzLTH8Y2GfgiO8uaYNdjChWpgVIqxS2gzF_sI78Sh5ELgaZVv7OuprM74NKNqIXTMvqOvDFOZqj4.ltPF-oA07Ep_MRbakZvHNS_zQKAujiDTxiMnQYObGEk&dib_tag=se&keywords=wood+carving+tools+set&qid=1710934364&sprefix=wood+carving+to%2Caps%2C225&sr=8-
Northmount Report post Posted March 20 16 hours ago, Shadders said: The pattern has a straight line of five or so 1mm (1/25”) square holes in it Is this pattern for decoration, or does it serve some functional use? If it is for decoration only, it could be left out, or you could use round punches that you may already have or are more easily obtainable.
Shadders Report post Posted March 20 Hello Wepster and Northmount, @Wepster Gosh, I looked on Etsy and managed to completely miss those, thank you for posting the link. I've ordered the set, even if they're no good, it was less then £20 including shipping so it's not going to break the bank. The chisel idea is good too! Though they dont seem to go as small as 1mm. Thank you, very much appricated! @Northmount It's a decorative pattern. But the pattern is a minture of a Hermes Birkin bag, so I'd like to retain the detail if I can. I think I must secretly enjoy making life more complicated for myself. Thank you both for taking the time to reply, my best to you both. Shadders. Wepster Report post Posted March 21 @Shadders those cheap wood carving tools I linked to are not great, BUT, the straight "chisel" can be easily ground or filed to your desired width, same with the V gouge. Those things are cheap Chinese, so ali express, or one of your local hobby shops or inexpensive tool stores probably has a set. Here is a link, again shows shipping to US, do not know to you, or your VAT or import taxes. https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2255799842652071.html?spm=a2g0o.detail.pcDetailTopMoreOtherSeller.4.626e19c7tm4U6O&gps-id=pcDetailTopMoreOtherSeller&scm=1007.40000.327270.0&scm_id=1007.40000.327270.0&scm-url=1007.40000.327270.0&pvid=2c0860b8-d0f4-41b7-80ce-343845152b2f&_t=gps-id:pcDetailTopMoreOtherSeller,scm-url:1007.40000.327270.0,pvid:2c0860b8-d0f4-41b7-80ce-343845152b2f,tpp_buckets:668%232846%238116%232002&pdp_npi=4%40dis!USD!8.15!7.65!!!58.45!54.86!%402101e62517110121667631756e7e1e!12000027302796103!rec!US!3960785007!&utparam-url=scene%3ApcDetailTopMoreOtherSeller|query_from%3A&search_p4p_id=202403210209268021401770410937712499_3 Enjoy your journey in leather!
