Members Herbie Posted August 6, 2024 Members Report Posted August 6, 2024 Just exactly what is the definition of a three-piece belt? I have searched on here and saw a few pictures, but I would like to know what the definition is. This is an example of me needing to have terms defined. I asked a leather provider online chat, and we guessed at the meaning, but I want to know what you all think. Thanks in advance for any replies. Quote
Contributing Member fredk Posted August 6, 2024 Contributing Member Report Posted August 6, 2024 To me a three piece belt is back piece, a buckle billet and a billet with the buckle holes. All sewn together. Any one of the three sections can be removed and changed The 3- piece can be seen on a gun belt mostly Quote
Members Mablung Posted August 7, 2024 Members Report Posted August 7, 2024 Fredk has this right, I think. Not sure there’s any other belt design that could conceivably qualify. Western gun belt rigs and ranger belts use essentially the same construction, with the main belt piece and billets. Quote

Members Herbie Posted August 7, 2024 Author Members Report Posted August 7, 2024 Good answer! So, anyone referring to a three-piece dress belt is probably talking about a Ranger belt I would imagine? This is how my question came to be. Quote

Members Herbie Posted August 7, 2024 Author Members Report Posted August 7, 2024 The chat lady suggested it might be a nice buckle, loop and nice tip. KInd of close. Quote

Members Cattleman Posted August 7, 2024 Members Report Posted August 7, 2024 Ranger Belt... Usually made with a fancy buckle, loop, and tip set. The pictures above are a ranger belt minus the fancy hardware. Quote
Members Handstitched Posted August 15, 2024 Members Report Posted August 15, 2024 G'Day, The 3 piece belts I have made in the past were made up of off cuts long enough to make a usable belt. First piece the buckle end, then a D ring ( or an 'O'ring or square ring) , then a middle piece, then another D ring and then the billet, hence the 3 pieces. Each piece can be tooled, carved etc. the middle piece for example, can also be a different colour to the rest of the belt. The off-cuts can be turned into quite a unique one off belt. The sky is the limit for ideas and designs. Hope this helps . HS Quote
Members DoubleKCustomLeathercraft Posted September 19, 2024 Members Report Posted September 19, 2024 There's a leather company up here in Montana that does custom belts. I can't remember the name of the top of my head. They have 3 piece belt, and what this does is allows them to produce the two ends (buckle and billet) at standard lengths, then the custom part is sewn on and sets across the back. They also refer to these as 3 piece. Dunno if there's a right or wrong answer, because any belt with 3 pieces essentially falls into this category. Quote
