tedbow Report post Posted Monday at 05:54 AM Hi all, I need some guidance if you like; you see I am trying to find some information in regards to GUILDS.... Guilds as in master craftsman/women... Hopefully I don't have to breakdown the meaning of the word "Guilds" & what they stood/stand for. A bit about myself: I repair sewing machines (All kinds - not just simple straight stitchers) : Post bed, Cylinder arm, Flatbed, Embroidery, Chainstitch, Blindhemmers, Overlockers, Zigzag machines...Domestic & Industrial... So all I do is repair sewing machines for my business customers & my domestic making customers My business customers produce/repair : Repair Bouncy castles, Manufacture leather goods for the Arab states, International Sports goods manufacturer, Vehicle accessories manufacturer/upholsterer - the lists go on. The question I suppose I am trying to ask is : Is there a guild of which encompasses the quality of workmanship that goes into making a sewing machine perform to its best ability to perform quality stitches? I don't just mean machines that are brandnew off the production line (even some of them don't work out of the box - but that a different subject) I mean machines that have been used & abused & possibly years old (100 perhaps) that without correct attention the owner cannot get that piece of machinery to make 1 single stitch. A bit like a Clock or Watch repairer - they he/she will repair a watch/clock that perhaps is now skipping steps within the mechanism's, ie. the date is not changing or perhaps the second hand jumps every now & then or the mechanism is seized & the watch/clock has some significant monetry value or historical importance & therefore needs to be made good to start performing. So like the guild mentioned above links can be found here for identification of the Watch makers/ repairers guild - https://www.clockmakers.org/the-company or this 1 https://bwcmg.org/index.php/professional-charter/ Is there a similar guild for repairs to sewing machines as a mechanical device to perform a task ie, produce a quality stitch.? Looking forward to hear from you all & your thoughts as to where this identity I am seeking sits within the proffesional tradesman repairman/women. I am based in the UK on the North Devon Coast & run www.bidefordsewingmachines.com I am in no means taking away the quality of workmanship that goes into producing fine quality products such as leather bags or machine sticthed shoes/boots; I am trying to seek the recognition of the work involved of which helps the machine to perform it's best quality stitch available for the enduser----- just like a clock/watchmaker /repairer has recognition for their work restoring various clocks & timepieces for the enduser to appreciate. Ideas of similar Guilds IF any in your country would be greatly appreciated .. just wondering that is all Hope I am not alone Much obliged Terry

Wizcrafts Report post Posted 10 hours ago @tedbow, I see Facebook "groups" that specialize in sewing machine repairs, modifications, and usage. If you're a Facebooker, you might want to search some of them out and join them on a trial basis. As for guilds, the only one I personally know about is the Crispin Colloquy. I suggest you start there. It has been a source of inside information about sewing for decades.
