Good morning.

i am looking at a consew226r1 . I am curious if the bobbin hold enough thread to do belts and gun slings. I know that it’s the smaller bobbin.
I mostly do wallets and knife sheaths . 14 oz of leather is the max that I would be sewing most of the time . Maybe 18 oz of leather .
I can hand sew that if needed .

What size thread and needles do you recommend?

looking for advice.

The 14 oz is just shy of 1/4" and should be no problem. The max size of thread for your machine is V138. As far as whether the smaller bobbin will do your belts and slings is going to depend on their length, what size of thread you are using and your stitch length. A prewound bobbin of V92 will have about 25 yds of thread verses about 12 yds of V138.

Probably not going to be able to handle that thickness of leather.

Your machine is rated for V138 with a 135 X 16 X #23 or #24 needle depending on how thick / tough the leather is. Even though the #24 needle can take V207 you may have problems with head space clearance when using V207 in the bobbin.

I have a Chinese patcher which has small bobbins.  They hold ~ 20 feet of V92 thread (~16' of 138 and ~25' of 69).  I just finished a belt, the continuous sewn length is 67 inches of leather laminated to diver's-belt webbing, total thickness 3/16."  It used just about half the bobbin at 9 stitches per inch.  The bobbins are .680" in diameter by .190" inside width.  This might give you some idea of what your bobbins will hold.  Just for your info, the Chinese patcher will sew 20 oz. leather with no problems (I motorized mine.).

I looked at the dimensions of the 226r bobbins, and they are over twice the size of my bobbins and will hold over twice the thread.
