American leather history in the 17th-19th centuries

Recommended Posts

Hallo, friends.

As part of Black History Month, next month, a local museum/living history resource has reached out to me in search of general historical information on pre-20th century leatherwork, as well as any specific focus on Black leatherworkers/tanners. The theme, I'm told, for this year is “African Americans and Labor,” and I'd love to help them out. I know quite a lot about leatherwork in the ancient world, pre-colonial Europe, Asian, and African leather traditions, but my knowledge of post-colonial America is rather thin on the ground. I would appreciate any specific sources, or information, you could share or direct me towards.

Thank you
