Members KeelInch Posted April 26 Members Report Posted April 26 Hey guys, I have recently purchased a Adler 5-27 and just have a few questions. What needles do they take as I was only given one but the previous owner had chopped a random needle down to suit? Also if anyone knows where I could find a manual for it or any other information like that it would be greatly appreciated. cheers Quote
Members Tigweldor Posted April 27 Members Report Posted April 27 (edited) They take needles 328 I can e-mail you the original manual - it is in German though and I only have it in pdf form. Covers Adler type 4 and type 5 - pretty well identical mechanics - definitely identical thread routing - except one is a flatbed - the other is a cylinder arm machine. They are very close to the Singer 45 - you can sure get a manual for those in English for free online. Greetings Hans Edited April 27 by Tigweldor Quote
Members Constabulary Posted April 27 Members Report Posted April 27 328 needles are often named as 214x1 (for fabric) or 214x2 (for leather) - same needle just a different "name". Members Tigweldor Posted April 28 Members Report Posted April 28 If you have any probs with your machine - do not hesitate to ask. Adler 4 and 5 are one of my favorite old machines - I own both versions with the "jump foot" and have bought, repaired and sold quite a few of them. Greetings Hans Quote

Greetings Hans Hi Hans My machine Adler 5-27 are breaking the thread instantly when starting to stitch even with loose thread. It looks like it is when the needle is going in. What can be the reson for this? Regards Fleming Quote

Regards Fleming If the needle is splitting the top thread on the way into the material, your check spring ie either not properly set, or is accidentally bypassed, or is missing. The purpose of a check spring is to maintain some tension on the top thread as the take-up arm moves down. The assembly should have a bottom stopper bracket that can be adjusted to stop the downward movement of the spring at a position where the needle has just entered the top of the material. The spring action should be adjustable too. Set it to just hold the thread taut. This should solve the thread splitting problem. Members Tigweldor Posted 1 hour ago Members Report Posted 1 hour ago (edited) Hi, If you give me your e-mail address via personal message, I will send you a pdf of the original user manual for the Adler 4 and 5 machines. It is in German language - so you should be able to understand the text without an AI translator. Another thing : are you sure that you have the needle positioned the right way ? Industrial needles as used in the Adler 4 and 5 units have to be in such a position, that the thread enters from the left side of the needle when facing your machine and exits to the right side - not like home sewing machines where you are facing the thread hole of the needle when sitting in front of the machine. Latter is just to make sure that your needle is in the correct position - else your thread will break as soon as it tries to tie a knot with the hook. Are you also sure that the needle size used is the correct one analog to the thread used ? - A heavy thread will require a thicker needle in order to ensure proper pass through the fabric/leather. Last but not least - what type of needle are you using - the Adler type 4 and 5 use needle type 328 - get the ones made by Schmetz and avoid copies made in Chinesistan or India - they are mostly junk with inferior dimensions and quality. Also : try to pull on the thread before it is engaged to the eye of the needle - if you can not pull it a centimeter before it breaks, your top thread tension settings are way to stiff/strong.
