pepin1948 Report post Posted March 5, 2007 My thanks to those in the pattern section who sent me links for pictures of Medieval style swords. Here is the work in progress. I'm not 100% thrilled with it, but I think when all is said and done, the customer will be happy. I also used one of the new Celtic border stamps from Tandy. The customer wants it black (boo! Hide all that tooling!) So I figured I'd better send some pics out now so you can see a little more detail.
Johanna Report post Posted March 5, 2007 I would paint that sword with Neat Lac and do the black dye work around the design with a triple ought brush, being very careful not to let the dye bleed on the sword. It's just plain wrong to carve something like that and dye it black. If the customer hates it, which he won't, you can always dye over the Neat Lac with oil dye and it will be fine. pepin1948 Report post Posted March 5, 2007 I wrote him suggesting some color on the sword (i.e. silver and something) but I like your idea too
pepin1948 Report post Posted March 11, 2007 Finished and ready to go to the customer tomorrow. Hard to get good pics of a (mostly) black piece. I had to laugh: I asked the customer's wife what his favorite color was (to put on the hilt of the sword), and she said..."Camo!" Sure enough, in walks the guy in a camouflage shirt! It was just too funny. Anyhow, he said it was green, and he didn't mind if I added color to the sword. At least it's not unrelieving black now...I mean, that's okay with some projects, but I prefer a little color!
Johanna Report post Posted March 11, 2007 That silver worked out nicely to accent the sword. He should be very pleased indeed. Johanna
pepin1948 Report post Posted March 11, 2007 I wish the green showed up more in the pics, but it was just enough to set the hilt off from the background. I didn't want to make it too bright or it would look cartoonish. The fellow got it this morning and really liked it. His wife is hoping it will encourage him to play more!
