Leather wallet bending

i am making a double layered wallet like corter here

I dont understand how he can make the inside piece as long and wide as the outside. Wont when, when you bend the wallet, the inside piece will be longer than the outside piece?

please shed some light if you can

The inside piece needs to be shorter than the outside. The differance depends on the leather thickness, but the best way I have found is to fold the inner piece, then fold the outter piece over it and mark it, then trim to length.

yes but that means it wont be able to open up entirely. but corter here can open entirely and close

mmm i know what you mean and have had the same problem, but no solution sorry, tried Aaron's method which worked ok but I need more practice I think.

Yes, but you see Corter's cut away the majority of the liner, and there's only a 1/4" sliver on the top and bottom near the stitching. This small area is going to compress easily as the wallet is folded, whereas a full liner wouldn't...

My recommendation is to make a mock-up. Take a piece of unusable leather (one that has range marks, scars, etc.) and try building a quick wallet liner like Corter's. Just glue, don't stitch, don't finish -- the idea is to make something quickly to test out an idea. You'll save yourself a lot of cussin' by messing up and modifying a test piece, instead of the final one...

I'm having a similar problem wherein I can't figure out how to punch the stitches. I can't very well punch all of the holes with the whole thing folded up, but when I lay things flat the inside piece is smaller.

Is my best bet just to glue everything in the folded position and then punch my stitches afterward? I don't typically glue my projects.
