My skiver spins when nothing on it but doesn't with the leather.

I tried sharpening but it even stops spinning when the grinder hits it.

So frustrating.

It looks like you have the bell too far forward and it is under the presser foot which will stop it from working. Also I think I see a large chip out of your blade which will need to be sharpened out. Follow through the steps in this video I made and note the distance from the presser foot to the bell edge is adjusted correctly and then again after you have sharpened the chip out.

Thank you. It is skiving but I tried using this to clean the grinder but I can't get it in good enough. Is there something else I can use?

And my bell doesn't seem to adjust left and right with the outer knob.

Yes there is. I gave up trying to use the revolving type years ago and now use a diamond tipped dressing tool. This picture is one I found on Amazon which looks a bit like mine. They work a lot better and way quicker so be careful not to go in to hard with it.

They seem not to move at all for quite a few turn which is why they normally supply a winding handle I guess. 20 turns will hardly seem much.

There's a huge reduction ratio on that left-right adjustment of the bell and the first dozen turns or so just absorb the slack when you switch from adjusting in one direction to the other.

@RockyAussie  do any of your skiver video's show you, using the diamond tip dressing tool.  I'm curious how they work.   I found what you referenced on Amazon, just having trouble envisioning how it's used to not put a grove in the sharpening wheel.    Thank you

I never used this kind of tool, but the way I'd use it would probably be approaching the bell from the top with the pin of the tool downwards, just to the left of the cutting edge. It would require a certain amount of precision to get the angle just right. It's the amount of precicion an experienced user would have, but not me, so I'll rely on the built-in sharpening wheel, which is always at the right angle.

The built-in wheel has allowed me to sharpen the the bell knife so that I could skive down 0.8mm (2 oz) super-supple nappa leather to half thickness. That's all the sharpness I need.

If your skiver stops spinning when the sharpening stone hits it, I suggest checking the belt tensions in the machine; they might be worn and slipping.
